Hi
I was waiting for the $100+$25 bonus to return and it has, from the SpeakOut websit: "From July 2-August 31, 2014, purchase a $100 Top Up voucher and receive a FREE SIM Card plus a $25 Top Up bonus"

Note, I ordered the top-up on line and waited for the airtime to appear in the on-line account but it never did. Turns out if you order the SIM card bonus, the 12 character activation code is on the emailed receipt and you have to manually enter it in online under "Activate my voucher". Then the $125 gets added right away. I had called customer service and they said it was a glitch if you opt for the free SIM card.

My SpeakOut balance expires Aug 31st (but I'll still have a few dollars left in the account on that date), so I'd like to take advantage of that $100 + $25 offer. My question is, how exactly should I go about doing this so that my next expiry date isn't before Aug 31, 2015?

Should I order the SIM and the offer now, then wait until Aug 31st to activate? I guess if I activated before Aug 31, then the new expiry would be before Aug 31, 2015, right? And since I already have a SIM in my phone, I can just put aside the SIM they send me, right?

I'm just trying to figure out exactly how this all works in practice.

If you activate on August 31st 2014, then the new expiry would be August 30, 2015, since they count the day you activate it as day 1.

You can also put the SIM aside since you already have one in your phone. You don't need to activate it.

Thanks very much. Is there any kind of grace period, so if I activated on, say, September 5, my service would still be in effect between Aug 31 and Sep 5?

I believe your service will be available till for at least 30 days after expiry. However, you might lose your balance, so make sure you have a low balance if you are going to do this.

The new CRTC rules allow for a 7 day grace period for topping up. Check this link, about half way down in the 'Prepaid' section.

Doug, I had forgotten that the 'link' function on this forum doesn't work. The link never shows up in the post. You just have to copy and paste the address. Thanks.

I think it was this:

In particular:
Do you pay before you use your wireless service? If so, you use prepaid services, and you have the right

to cancel your contract at no cost after a maximum of two years
to cancel your contract and return your phone at no cost, within 15 days and specific usage limits, if you are unhappy with your service
to have your phone unlocked after 90 days, or immediately if you paid in full for your phone
to have your service suspended at no cost if your phone is lost or stolen
to receive a notification when you are roaming in a different country, telling you what the rates are for voice services, text messages, and data usage
to a minimum seven-day grace period in order to “top up” your prepaid card account and retain your balance

My fear would be that if you waited till after Aug 31, grace period notwithstanding, you wouldn't get the $25 bonus on the airtime you bought. From what I remember, the bonus is usually only good if you activate the airtime during the promo period; in this case, on or before Aug 31st.

I think you'd have to choose - get a longer expiry date (assuming Speakout honours the CRTC grace period rule) but lose the $25 bonus or activate on Aug 31st and get the extra $25. If you chose the latter and still really wanted to change your expiry date, you could buy more airtime and activate it after Aug 31 to push your date out (maybe even wait for the Christmas promo).

Just my 2 cents.

Don't wait. The $25 bonus will only be added if you ACTIVATE it (not buy it) by August 31. If that's the day your service expires, it may not be midnight of that day as you might expect. Do it today to be safe! I've lost two accounts by renewing on expiry date (slow learner). One was t-mobile and the other was speakout. It was before the new laws so maybe the grace period will save you now, but if you have $$ on your current account I wouldn't risk it.
