I bought the 1600 this afternoon, and so far I haven't found anything to complain about. This forum really helped me get started. Setting up my voicemail account from my landline was also a great tip I got.
Actually Sapien, if you buy a $100 card, it's good for 365 days...which would give you....10,000 minutes to use for the year during evenings and weekends..which works out to....like $8.33 or something like that. I'm just not sure how to just activate the sim card without letting Rogers know what yer gonna do. I looked online and it's required to give the serial number to yer phone aswell...I wonder if you could just lie and say I'm going to buy an unlocked GSM phone today and just get the SIM card activated and stick it in yer 1600 :p
Manny, do you live in the GTA?
If this plan of mine will actually work practically, I'll definitely buy it.

That's how I did it with my phone- Bought a brand new unused Rogers Sony Ericsson w300i off craigslist for $100 which came with a SIM. Called Rogers to activate it on the 1 cent plan. I also had a Nokia 1600 which I got free with the $100 airtime and promptly sold upon getting my hands on the w300i which is way better than any speakout phone. The 1600 had problems receiving column lists which I receive daily as they won't display in proper alignment.
In hindsight I probably should have kept the 1600 for use with the Rogers SIM as it is difficult to swap SIM cards on the w300i while on the Nokia you just have to flip the latch.
100$ Rogers airtime lasts a year. They don't come in vouchers so you have to go up to the cashier and ask him to print out the airtime for you- same deal as with speakout.

I think it depends on the store. I was at the cell phone kiosk in the Calgary NW Costco and it sounded like they would have been willing to sell me a Rogers SIM. But that may have been only because they had extras lying around. In the end I didn't buy it so I have no idea of the cost, etc.
Rogers will sell you a sim for $25. If they don't have any in store, they will order it for you. It's part of their product list.
For SO, it says on the brochure "Replacement SIM cards are available at a cost of $25.00″

The main difference is also an important one for some people. Unless you buy $100 vouchers, air time expires after only 180 days rather than 1 year (and even 15 months if you buy 2x $50 at SO.)
Even if you're prepared to buy a $100 of airtime at PC in order to get a good deal on the phone, unless you use at least $100 per year, every year, you won't be able to buy smaller top-ups to extend airtime by 1 year as you can at SO.
Petro-Canada Mobility and SO are essentially the same, both are operated by Ztar Mobile.
Unless you are buying $100 to take advantage of some promotion, there really isn't any reason to do so.
I choose Petro Canada's Mobile because there's one close to where I live, the phones were cheaper, and SO didn't have a promotion at the time.
I buy $20 at a time. The $20 last for 180 days. When I run out I just buy another $20.
In the unlikely event at the end of the 180 day period, there are minutes left over, just buy another $20 just before the end. Since the minutes carry over, no $$ is lost. This is true for both, Petro-Canada and SO.
If you cannot finish $20 in 6 months, then $100 in a year is probably more problematic. Besides $3.34 per month is a pretty darn good deal for an emergence cell phone. 🙂

I am in Calgary. Just went into a 7-11 this afternoon and the sign advertising the 1600s for $49 bucks was there. I asked for a 1600 + $20 on minutes but the guy declined to sell it to me saying that the sign was old and the promotion was no longer on. So I ended up getting the 2610 and in this case he gave me the $25 off (although he said technically he couldn't give the discount). Now I come here and find out that the promotion is supposed to last until end of March. Instead of getting a phone + $20 in minutes for $70. I only got a phone for $75.
I AM PISSED OFF AT 7-11!!!!

On March 2, 2008 I bought a Speak Out Nokia 1600 telephone and $25.00 of air time through the current promotion where you buy $25.00 of air time and the hand set is reduced to $49.00. This was as a result of your research information and forum here Peter. Thank you.
This phone was bought by me for the use of my 28 yo daughter. After 3 txt messages from me and a telephone message, she has been informed that all time from the $25.00 card has been used. This just isn't possible.
When my daughter called the 611 technical line , they said that because it was prepaid service, they had no log records of how the time was used. This just doesn't seem possible.
We are concerned about paying to add more time and wonder if we should switch the phone. We would also think that a request for a credit for the $25.00 of air time would be apporpriate. could you please advise of the best person to direct this issue to for early resolution.
Thank you.

This may be an obvious question, but the phone comes with $5 of airtime initially. Did you remember to add the $25 of additional airtime? If you still have both receipts, the one where you paid for the phone & airtime and the one which gives you a 12-14 digit code to add the airtime? Try adding the additional airtime again, maybe the first time it didn't take?

Well don't get too pissy.
You got a $ 125.00 phone ( regular price ) and besides, you CAN'T buy $ 20.00 airtime from SO, only 25, 50 or 100.
Having a bad day ?

Hello,
I was with Rogers for several years and cancelled my plan 3 months ago to go abroad. I still have my old Rogers phone and its sim card. Is there any way I could use that Rogers (LG Chocolate) phone on a prepaid plan with 7-11? do I really have to buy another phone ? Can I switch the sim cards at least? I certainly don't want to be tied up anymore in a contract and having to deal with Rogers! If anyone knows, let me know.
thanks
J

Yes, a SO SIM will work fine in a locked Rogers phone.
But if you're off contract now with Rogers you might want to ask them for an unlock code. Tell them that you're moving to the US and want to use the phone there with a T-Mobile SIM. It's at least worth a try.

The staff at 7-Eleven told me that too when I went to buy my 1600. Ask to speak to the manager. You'll get it eventually. The staff is just giving you the runaround because they don't know what the heck is going on and can't be bothered to check.

All you need would be a Rogers SIM which you can buy from Rogers or off the net.
Does anyone know what Rogers policy re Sims is? I contacted two Rogers stores. One said they didn't sell SIMs separately. The other said if I brought the phone in, they would check out the phone and install a Rogers SIM for me but again would not sell the SIM separately.
Does anyone actually have any direct experience in buying a SIM only from Rogers?
