So far we are reasonably pleased with the 2760 but there have been a few moments when the person on the other end starts to sound garbled. We'll see if it continues or not...

Hello

I am thinking of eventually switching to Speakout, because I love the feature that any dollar amount you buy lasts a year. I only use my phone for emergencies, and only use it for about 5-10 minutes a month.

If I were to buy a phone now with the promotion going on (Preferably the Nokia 1600), can I just hang on to it, and use it when I am ready to switch. Or if I buy it now, do I have to activate the phone within a specified time frame?

Thanks!!

You have 90 days to activate the airtime credit. I hope to pick one up soon. My Rogers prepaid just topped up to $20 so have to wait until it's all used up, oh well.

I would echo Jeremy's sentiments. Not quite as clear as my Razor but perfectly acceptable in my case as a back up phone. Has lots of nice features like a calendar, couple of games, 14 ringtones, camera, movies. Very user friendly in terms of inputing contacts, etc...Heard that some thought the keyboard was cheap but I quite like it. Phone is very light, and looks very nice. My wife said the call clarity was good when I called her. She was a little garbled to me. Also changed my phone number to reflect my calling area from a 647 area code. Really easy to set up. I'm very happy with the whole experience thus far. Bought 2x $50 airtime vouchers and will activate the 2nd one within 90 days time so that I will effectively get 395 days out of this phone.
Total cost was $171 for the 2760 including the phone, tax, and the $100 worth of airtime. Cheers and happy chatting!

I can't add...effectively will get 455 days out of the phone (365+90).

A question for those of you who are more knowledgeable than I. I am on a plan right now with Rogers that ends in December. If I grab a phone with this deal, can I put my SIM card in the new phone and keep the same number? (I'm not clear on how SIM cards work).

I actually tried to switch to a Pay As You Go plan through Rogers, effective at the end of my contract, but they wanted to charge me $50 to do so. Signing up once my contract ends is free but I'll have to get a new # I was told. I just don't get the lack of customer service.

I'm not sure what you're asking. The SIM carries the "personality" (phone number, airtime credit, calling features, etc.) of the plan you have with that SIM. You can use your Rogers SIM in either the phone and you'll have your Rogers phone number and plan. You can use your SpeakOut SIM in either phone and you'll have your SO phone number and airtime.

If you port out your Rogers phone number to SO then your SO SIM will be associated with your old Rogers phone number and Rogers will invalidate your Rogers SIM so that it will no longer work with any phone.

I'm not sure if that answers your questions. Fire away if not.

I called Rogers to close my account (end of three yrs contract) to switch to Speakout. Rogers then offered $5/month plan (40min/month) because I am a very light user. That will come to $13-14/month after fees and tax. I rejected the offer and picked up a 7-11 Nokia 1600.

So, does that 90 days count down from the time I make my first call? I am thinking of buying the phone, and shelving it for a few months, possibly up to 6 months. I am with Virgin Mobile, but since I hardly use the phone, Speakout seems more practical.

If you use the present "free phone" promotion you have to buy $100 worth of time. That time has to be activated within 90 days of its purchase date.
The phone comes with a $5 credit on it - so you can activate the phone right away - which will happen as soon as you make a call. If you don't use the phone too much you can delay activating the time for up to 90 days.
I bought my $100 of time in 4 x $25 units - so I've activated one unit, but I can delay activating the others (or sell them!) - effectively giving me $105 of time over 15 months.

MM good for you...I'm starting to think that Roger's is becoming a monopoly and their pricing is starting to go up. Apparently we as Canadian's pay amongst the highest per minute airtime fees...read it in the Star a couple of months ago.

I've had the 2610 for a few days now. It's great. A nice design, not a cheap look or feel and smaller than it looks in pictures. features are fine and I haven't had to charge it yet!
For $25 (promo) it's a great buy.

90 day limit is to activate the airtime vouchers, starting on the date you bought them from the store.

So if you bought the $100 worth of vouchers to get the free phone, then put away the phone, after 90 days, those airtime vouchers will no longer validate and add time to your phone.

If you never activated the phone itself, I don't believe the phone will expire at all. However, once you've made a call on the phone, the phone and number is now activated. After that, according to the terms in the pamphlets I got, your mobile number may be cancelled if your account has no activity for 120 consecutive days. And to reinstate your service, a service activation fee and a new wireless phone number may be required.

It also states in another section that if your account expires (airtime runs out), and you don't refill it within 45 days, your phone number may also be cancelled.

Also keep in mind there's a reoccurring monthly 911 fee as well. But that's the same with most other PAYG plans.

Where can I more info on the "reoccurring monthly 911 fee"? I saw a mention of it on the Roger's website, but can't find anything on it with regards to the 7-11 phones. How much is it? The Terms & Conditions" seem to refer to other possible reoccuring fees. Anyone know how much $$ we are talking about here?

As for a previous question on text messaging, I can only speak to the 2610 - I'm using it a lot. Works fine.

You don't trust the Unofficial FAQ? It states that the 911 fee is 99¢ per month. If there were any other reoccurring fees, I'm sure Peter would have mentioned it in the FAQ. But if you want official confirmation, you can call customer service at 1-866-310-1023 or read the pamphlet.

BTW, the pamphlet states that the 911 fee is .99¢, but I'm sure most right-thinking individuals would have guessed that it should say 99¢. In any case, no customer has reported a monthly .99¢ deduction in their accounts. 🙂

ok, so i downloaded a custom mp3 i made......onto my 2760. when i try to selct it as my ringtone it says "cannot be set as ringing tone""!! huh??? the phone has its own preloaded mp3's which are used as ringtones.

anyone know why this is happening?

I am having the exact same issue. It seems from googling that it may be restricted to purchased ring tones which is aggravating.

I just bought a $50 voucher, on the voucher, It now reads "expire 365 after activation". On another paragraph it reads "Subject to 7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless Terms of Serve. See terms at http:www//www.7eleven.com. Use within one year."
Does this mean that you have one year to activate the voucher now?

The policy has not changed, to my knowledge. The voucher MUST BE ACTIVATED WITHIN 90 DAYS of purchase date. Then you have 365 days to USE the minutes.

Still, a good deal. If all you want is a cheap emergency phone, buy the 1600 for $114(taxes included). If you activate it within the 90 days and use the minutes within 365 days from that point, it would work out to $7.6/month.

Here is the trick:
To download the mp3 ringtone in your 2760, I did the following thing and worked for all the mp3 files.
1. First of all, open your Nokia PC suite in your PC and open media player given in the Nokia PC suite.
2. In this Nokia player, open your mp3 file (you don't need to play...if you want go ahead and test it).
3. Now, save this file as .aac file with whatever default settings are given. The Nokia Media player should convert your selected mp3 file successfully.
4. The .aac file generated from your mp3 shold work fine as a ring tone in your 2760.

I used 2-3 ringtones this way and all of them are still working without any problem.

Enjoy!!
