Which option would you go for? Both from a rates and phone offer perspective?

From reading up on the services, they seem fairly similar, but I just thought I'd throw the question out.

Also, if one buys the phone/sim card (from either 7-eleven or Petro Canada) in Calgary, and later moves to Toronto, would I then have to pay long distance rates calling within the Toronto region?

Many thanks in advance.

I have been a SO customer for almost a year now and have never been happier. One of the main advantages it has over Petro Canada is that you can top up only once a year for only $25 vs $100. $25 with Petro only lasts 120 days. If you move to another province, you can ask to have your number changed to a local number. I think it is only $10 to change your number and they may do it for free. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. It seems Petro are currently offering the Nokia 1661 for $29 when you buy $25 of airtime, whereas 7-Eleven are charging $39 for the phone when you buy $50 of airtime.

I wonder if Petro also offers the option of changing one's number if moving to another province?

It depends how much you use your phone. If it's for occasional use, the SpeakOut deal is cheaper - $89 for the year. At Petro Canada, you'll spend $54 up front, plus another $25 in 120 days, and another $25 120 days after that -- a total of $104.

SpeakOut is the better deal by far in my opinion. As mentioned, any top-up lasts a year. Plus, if you buy the package and don't like the phone, you can always sell the phone, and use the SpeaKout sim in another unlocked phone.
As for changing the number if you move across the country, that is free. It is only $10 if you want a new number within the same area code.

Thanks for the recommendations. Decided to go for SO in the end. Do you know if calling voicemail from a landline is toll free? If yes, what is the number for that? Thanks.

Yes, calling your voicemail from a landline is free, since airtime in not used. All will do is call your own SpeakOut number, then enter your password to hear your voicemail.
