Hubby was in Quebec for a few months and we both have a SO phone with a 519 area code. Whenever I called him or he called me, we had to dial it like a long distance phone call. Also, he's now in New Brunswick for a few weeks and we still have to dial like long distance and he ate through $100 in phone time in just one month and we don't talk often enough for that to make sense. So do you think he's being charged long-distance even though we both have 519 phones?

If your husband is in New Brunswick is dialing back to your (519) home area code, you shouldn't be charged long distance rates. That's just the way SpeakOut works, or you could verify with SpeakOut customer service why you are being deducted so much.
Does your phone have a call timer feature? If so, you could see the actual minutes you are using. If might not seem like a lot, but 5-10 minute calls can add up quickly.

I think I'm going to have hubby check his minutes right before he calls me next time and then keep track of the time he talks to me, then call back immediately after and check his minutes again. I thought it wsa odd that it was saying it was long distance when we both have 519 area codes. That's one of the reasons why we went with SO phones, so we wouldn't have to pay long distance because we knew he'd be travelling off and on with his new job and be away quite often over the next few months.

Thanks for this thread.
We lent my 514 phone to a friend who went to Toronto. She said it was prompting her to add "1" before the number when calling back to Montreal. She didn't because she was afraid to, it sounds like that would be okay and it would not charge LD (per iamdrumming's answer).
It makes it a little confusing because the 1514... calls are local and the 416... calls are LD!
