The SpeakOut price hike doesn't really affect people... with a $100 phone card the effective price is $.20 per min (with that crazy math they end up using).
One exception is long distance where the cost has doubled to 20รยข/minute (plus regular airtime rates.)
Still, I agree that for most people who buy $75 or $100 of airtime the rate increase is a non-issue.
And of course, if you buy $100 airtime in order to get the free phone, then flog the phone and SIM for say $50, then you effectively halve the cost of your airtime.

Generally when a Rogers/Fido/any other GSM provider sells a phone, it is locked so that it only accepts SIMs from that company. So you can't buy a phone from Rogers and stick a SIM from T-Mobile in it, etc.
When a phone is unlocked, you can stick in any SIM you want to use.
Speakout and PetroCan mobility phones are unlocked (to the best of my knowledge) and can use a SIM from any provider.
The SIMs used by Speakout and PetroCan happen to be coded the same way as Rogers SIMs, so you can also use a phone locked to Rogers if you want to. Because they are coded the same way as a Rogers SIM, you cannot use a phone locked to Fido (yeah, I know, same company, blah blah).
The Nokia 2610 is an older phone and is probably really hard to find, so the 2610 isn't really an option.
Even if the 2610 was available, I'd go for the 1208. The screen on the 1208 might be a little smaller, but the 2610 has a 'mirrored finish' on the screen which makes it a little difficult to see. Plus the 1208 has a considerably longer battery life. The 2610 may have an extra feature or two, but you won't be able to use them with Speakout or PetroCan.
Just get the 1208, unless you really want to spend the extra cast for the 2760 or the 5200.

I just phoned the Brampton 7-eleven location & they did tell me that there will be a new promotion starting Aug. 1 but told me to call back later, so I will update once I find out more ๐
EDIT: Just got off the phone with the Woodbridge store & they DID confirm that the August Promo is on!!! So with $100 airtime purchase you get the Nokia 1208 or 1600 FREE!!!!! or get $75 towards any other phone. Great news ๐

I'm new here. Excuse my ignorance. I got few questions here.
Does anyone know if the 5200 can play video?
Some store still has 1600, should I pick 1600 or 1208? Which one is better?
I saw someone post here a trick for buying the $100 airtime in 2x$50, so that we can have a max of 1year & 90 days expiry time. However, after the price per minutes raised, if adding $50, it will be $.25 per minutes. So, it doesn't worth to split the $100 airtime into 2, right?

I just phoned a petrocan near me and they gave me a price of $134 for the 2760 and $69.99 for the 1208. The web site still says $100 and $49 respectively for the phones. What gives? Also, any promos coming up for PCM. Iwas ready to buy one today, but not with that hike in prices. Love this place. Thanks

I am guessing they want to rip you off? They could be able to set their own prices too.
Oficially as per PCM website it still is 50$ and 100$ for the phones.
