This morning I was lucky to get the last Nokia 5200 & 1208 at Vancouver (Knight & 33rd). There were at least 5 1600 left.
The 5200 & 1208 are both unlocked, work with my Rogers SIM card.

Just because your phone works on Rogers SIM does not necessarily mean they are unlocked, since SO piggy backs on Rogers so their phones shares the same Network ID. I guess the only way to confirm is to try a non Rogers SIM, like a Fido or a foreign service. Maybe someone with the resources can give that a try.

I am thinking of picking up the Nokia 5200 myself, so I would also like to know definitively if the phone is unlocked.

Ok i just dialed *777, my phone is already activated with $5 and will expire on aug 2 2009. Did I activate it when i dialled *777 or did 7-11 activate it for me???

I will wait to activate my 100$ voucher towards the end of the month when i will port my existing # from Rogers.

your phone is activated once you make an outgoing call, that includes *777

Just picked up a 1208 at Dundas and Dovercourt location in Toronto. Still had two 1208s, a couple 2760s but no 5200s at 4:30 PM EST.

Great deal. Thanks for putting this website together.

Do they still come with 604 pre-activated numbers? I would buy one if yes

To Kevin and Iuli,

The SpeakOut price hike doesn't really affect people taking advantage of the (hopefully) August promo, since those people are buying a $100 phone card.

Remember, with a $100 phone card the effective price is $.20 per min (with that crazy math they end up using).

In fact, if that crazy math is correct, the effective price per SMS and the monthly 911 fee is lower on SO. That plus a free phone, so it's still a pretty good deal.

Still, in the past you could buy 2 cards of $50 each and have them available for 15 month instead of 12.

What do you mean 911 fee is lower? It's still $0.99!

Yes, it is $.99 whether you have a $25 card or a $100 card.

BUT with the new SpeakOut crazy math, it's kinda cheaper.

When you buy a $75 or $100 card, your airtime rate is supposed to be $.20 per minute, right?

Well, the way Speakout manages that is that they gross up your balance by 25% and then charge you $.25 per minute. So your effective balance is $.20 per minute.

But, they still only charge you a 911 fee of $.99 per month, whether or not your balance is increased.

It's not a big deal, kinda meaningless.

In the long run, even if your usage is REALLY low, whether you buy a $100 card, and then buy $25 cards each year after, or if you buy two $50 cards that last 15 months and then buy $25 cards each year after that, it'll all even out in the end.

So, your usage would have to be REALLY low for it to be worth your while trying to find a 7-11 store clerk that can do that 2x$50 + free phone thing.

Seems Petro Canada may be a better deal. They're offering the Nokia 2630 and athe 2760, both of which have many more features than the phones 7-ll is offering.

http://retail.petro-canada.ca/...../2310.aspx

I rather like the idea of having the addition of the camera and both of these are Bluetooth enabled.

I'm driving to London tomorrow to get two of them. Neither my husband nor I have cellphones. We did buy one in North Carolina, but for some strange reason, my hubby decided to wash his clothes and he didn't take the new phone out of his pocket. It never worked despite trying to dry it out after it was washed. 🙂 I do need to use Rogers in my location because Rogers has better coverage in my particular rural area.

Why on earth hubby decided to wash his clothes remains an enigma. 🙂

What a great site this is and thank you so much for all the information that is on this forum.

Thought I'd return the favour by posting what PetroCan is offering.

Since there is $5 airtime in preactivated phone, i can refill the $100 airtime later in 90 days period. Am I right?

Sylvia - is there a special offer from PetroCan besides the "100 minutes free" with the purchase of their 2630 or 2760? If not, that only adds up to a $20 voucher that expires in 180 days. That deal costs you $100 + tax.

Spend $136 + tax with S.O. ($74 off the $110 price for the 2760 with the $100 voucher) & get up to 500 min. local calls that expire in 365 days (PLUS the preloaded 20 min) if I did the math right. Isn't that a better deal?

The difference in long distance calls works out to 6 cents more per minute with S.O. with that voucher. Texting ends up being even less than PC. You can see the comparison on Peter's home page's FAQ. 911 fees will be taken monthly off both plans.

Thanks to Peter for this site - got my first 1600 last month & just picked up a 1208 today for my husband. Personally, I prefer the feel of the 1600's keypad & it just looks "heftier" than the soft plasticky 1208's. Both are just fine for our needs. So long to Telus monthly plans that we blindly paid for about 6 years even WITHOUT a contract...

I'll take pics with my real camera & don't need any of the other bells & whistles. Yikes - check out the battery life for talk time with the 2760 - only up to 2.5 hours!

I also have a 1600 as well as a 1208. I agree with the previous poster that the 1600 keypad feels more substantial than the one on the 1208. The 1600 has actual plastic buttons to press while the 1208 has a single piece plastic membrane over all the keys. The membrane prevents dirt and dust from accumulating between the keys, however, they are also much harder to find and press with your fingers especially large fingers. I would also speculate that the membrane itself is prone to fading and tearing over time. The 1208 phone is slightly more compact than the 1600 and has a built-in LED flashlight. It's subjective, but it seems that Nokia has cost reduced the 1208 in a number of areas - fewer plastic housing sections, flimsier plastic material (especially on battery cover), key membrane instead of buttons, and lack of battery cover "lock" (held in place by friction only). I prefer the 1600, it just feels more substantial to me, however, the 1208 is still a bargain with this August promotion and perfectly acceptable for casual phone usage.

The Nokia 5200 also feels flimsy and cheap compared with other slider phones. But it's still a good deal for $75 given all the extra features.

The 5200 seems to also have a ton of complaints of blue screen problems after a few months...hard to say the percentage of good vs bad phones...maybe they've resolved it by now.

Too late SO, I waited and waited and waited until my phone battery stopped charging and with no August promotion on the horizon I was forced to get into a 1 year contract with Rogers to get a replacement phone.

This is what happens SO when you dork around with promotions, you lose potential customers. Oh well, maybe next year.

Then you encouraged me to spend approximately $136.

That's $36.00 more than I need to spend!

I'm expecting that 100 minutes that expires in 365 days not 180 will last me a year. I don't talk much on telephones. No it doesn't bother me that the phone's battery gives up the ghost in 2.5 hours of talking. Who yaks for 2.5 hours on a cellphone without recharging it?

Hubby and I restricted our purchase of cell phones to one Nokia 2760, but need two cell phones because we're planning to cancel our land line due to receiving calls from rude telemarketers with no regard for anyone's time or privacy. We're trying out the 2760 and will decide if its adequate for our needs. I figured the flip feature made the phone harder to damage because it protects the screen and digital keyboard which did somehow compromise the battery life of the phone. Could have bought the Nokia 2630 which is not a flip phone with similar features and a longer battery life for the same price as the 2760.

We have friends that own one cellephone who purchase one 100 card from 7/11 annually. We'll ultimately be buying two 100 minute cards and a corresponding number of cellphones to ensure 200 minutes is enough for the two of us annually.

I decided I will not be using the camera that came with the phone...I already own a digital. But Call Display is handy feature and won't accept calls from anyone that I didn't send them my newly acquired cell number.
