Hi
I have some questions please
1. Can the Nokia phones purchase from 7-Eleven be used in India
2. In Canada, I am looking for a plan which has 1 year expiry for the minutes so that when my family calls/text from overseas I could receive. Are the incoming text messages from overseas expensive.
3. As I would like to use the speak out in Canada only for receiving overseas text or phone calls -- in coming. Can I also add another plan to it like startec or 10-10-620 plan. This is used when I call local in Canada or phone overseas.
4. Is there a better longdistance plan for calling overseas especially India
5. I read on this website that rogers also has $100 no expiry on minutes. Will that be a better option?
I do not use cell phones in Canada, just when I go overseas to India. In future I may not have a landline just a cell phone in Canada.
Thank you very much

1. No.
2. See FAQ #5.
3. Don't know about those, but I use YakCell. Note that you still have to pay for local airtime.
4. See 3. and compare.

Your best bet is probably an unlocked quadband GSM phone. You can use it with a SO SIM when in Canada to receive text messages (and make voice calls in Canada if you need to) as well as with whatever SIM you use in India.

To answer #5

Will Rogers prepaid be better for you? That's up to you to decide.

The $100/1yr expiry on Rogers prepaid is similar to Speakout's. Speakout does have the 1 yr expiry on their other airtime cards ($25, $50, $75), so if you plan on spending way less than $100/year, then Rogers isn't a good deal.

Other than that, compare the different pricing options that Rogers has compared to Speakout's single (but competitive) price per minute. For some people Rogers will be cheaper, for others (probably many others) Speakout will be the better bet.

Not sure how the long distance charges differ, but I'm sure they are both a rip-off. Either way you'll want to use one of services where you call a local number, type in a PIN, then call the international number. 10-10 services don't work on any cellphone (especially prepaid) to the best of my knowledge.

Other than that, the service should be about the same (since Speakout uses the Rogers network). Neither phone service will work in India, and both of them can receive calls from wherever as long as you (and the phone) are in Canada. Rogers prepaid MIGHT work in the US, not sure.

There is one thing I like about Rogers. They offer the Nokia 2680 (locked to Rogers, not unlocked like Speakout phones) and a bluetooth headset for $90 on the prepaid plan. The specs on this phone are a little low-end (basically exactly the same as the Nokia 2760 flip), but it is one nice phone. It's a slider phone that is a lot thinner than the Nokai 5200 and doesn't feel as cheap. One drawback is that it doesn't have a slot for a microSD card like the 5200. I wish Speakout would get this phone, it's priced well within the Speakout range.
