Cell data prices are extremely high in Canada.
The best way to get around these costs is to get a phone with WiFi capabilities.
Almost all hotels /motels, a lot of doughnut shops, some Chapters Books, some universities and a lot of other places offer free WiFi. If you're near any major cities it's not hard to find a location.
Once your connected to WiFi you have access to your email, voice over IP, Skype long distance, plus the Web at no cost to you.
What you need is only an iPhone or some other phone supporting WiFi (ie Nokia 6086)
This may not be as convenient as using one's carrier's data plans but sure saves a lot of money.

I agree it is very costly here compared to other countries.
I would be very careful using free un-encrypted Wifi for accessing your accounts though. At the minimum, the provider should encrypt the connection and provide you the encryption key. If it is not encrypted, anyone in range with a Wifi card and wireless sniffer software in a laptop can see what your password and account number are since they are broadcast out in clear text.
