Hey is this rumor of rate change actually confirmed or just speculation ? So which would lead me to believe that the date quoted is also speculation too ? I would really hate to pay $0.25/min

The rate change is confirmed on the official SpeakOut site. They are discontinuing the bonus minutes as a permanent offer.
As for the date I quoted (Nov 16) that the new promotion starts, that was given to me by an extremely reliable source 😉

Does anyone know if new phone models will be introduced for this promo?

Sorry. To clarify, when I said "activation" I meant when you apply the voucher, not when you activate the phone. In other words, when there's a promo that gives you bonus airtime on vouchers, it is more important as to when you actually apply the voucher rather than when you bought the voucher (as long as you apply the voucher within 90 days or purchasing it, of course).

Sorry, that's my bad too. When I was talking about activating the minutes, I meant "applying the voucher" as well.

So the answer is it doesn't matter if I buy the minutes vouchers during the Christmas promo. They need to be applied before the end of the year if I want my bonus minutes.

I was hoping I could buy during the promo, then wait the 90 days to apply the voucher so that I would still get the bonus minutes, and the "extra" 90 days. C'est la vie. Thanks.

Its not really confirmed until they actually said on their site that the
"special promo" will expire right ? And there is no date that the special promo on the $75 and $100 will expire yet and its all speculation still right ?
I am hopeful they dont change it

The bonus minutes will expire (as a permanent offer). It says on their site right under "Rates & Coverage" that the extra minutes is a limited time bonus. As for the date I gave, that's what I was told that the bonus minutes will continue until the end of the year, and be dropped in the new year. I was also told that the bonus minutes will return from time to time, as do other SpeakOut promotions.

Darn my minutes expire on Nov 11. Do I top up with $25 and see what phones are available? and then go for the $100 airtime... I have a Nokia 2760 but it is finiky with the bluetooth and just won't connect with some devices/headsets.
At least I have 4 1/2 weeks to decide.
Thanks for the info OP

Wow - just found out about SO from my sister so have spent the last hour or so reading some of these posts and figuring out if it was worth my while to break my contract with Telus (exp. May 2010). If I wait until this promotion starts next month, pay the cancellation charges with Telus, get a free phone and buy a $100 voucher, I will be coming out $115.00 ahead............. 😆 I am currently paying around $55/month for my Telus plan (with voice mail and caller i.d.) and I average about 45 minutes per month airtime. I almost feel sick thinking about the money I have spent for my cellular phone in the last 3 years 😥

This site is great and thanks so much for all the info - it certainly helped me make my decision.

If there is no longer a 25% bonus for buying $75 or $100 airtime, that will be like a 25% rate increase.

I guess I had better go back to Virgin Mobile before their $20 for 200 anytime minutes prepaid plan disappears.

anyone want to buy a Nokia 1208 cheap?

If it is comes with a Toronto-Hamilton area SP SIM card, I might be interested in buying it.

Virgin might make sense for you but $75 = 12 months or $240 = 12 months for some of us.

phones2,

It's not technically a rate increase because those minutes were always "free" bonus minutes. It's just now that SpeakOut is discontinuing the bonus minutes.

Also, if you offering something to sell, the ONLY place you should do that is the "Phone Exchange" forum, not here or anywhere else.

Thanks!

Sorry, I offered to buy (from the previous post). The quote was not 'quoted' correctly.

Virgin is who I'm planning on leaving. Everything seems to be creeping up cost wise overthere. I only hung on this long because they were dangling the carrot of being able to use a Virgin Canada phone in the US (but it's never happened.

iamdrumming, can your reliable source also confirm all the vouchers will keep their 365 expiry?

I am currently on Petro Canada, and this is the only reason I want to switch to SO, even tho I have 50$ with Petro Canada at the moment, and my airtime will expire in 2 months. I'm ending having hundred of dollars un-used because I keep needing to buy airtime because of the stupid expiry date

I never asked them about the expiry date, although I told them MANY times they better keep the 365 day expiry 🙂
My main question was in the original post of this thread. I wanted to know when the Christmas "buy a $100 voucher, get a phone for free" promotion was starting up, and I was told November 16th.

No, you will be able to get a $59 phone for free (like the Nokia 1661, or the Nokia 1208 if it's still available) if you buy one $100 voucher. If those two phones don't interest you, then you will be able to get $59 off another SpeakOut phone. You can not "double up" like that.

Good to know about the November deal. I went in tonight for my third phone and was told the 100$ special (half price phone) was discontinued so I didn't buy one. I thought some special would be coming this winter so this is worth waiting for. Thanks.

iamdrumming ty i know in sept of2008 the free ones 1208 and 1600 but if you got two 100 you could upgrade to a 5000 something or a 2700 but it sounds like they changed that

Folks,

I can say this tip is believable because when I check with the current "handset guide matrix insid the store (not online version as it has not been updated), it mentions it is good until November 15th. So go figure.
