I was just in a 7/11 here in Windsor, ON. The girl at the counter said she recieved an email stating that the "buy $100 of airtime and get a free phone" deal will be back for October. A back-to-school special or somthing. So, I'm going to hold off untill then. Besides, she said that they are going to be getting in some newer phones before then.

Just wanted to let everyone know: I received an email a couple of weeks ago from a 7-11 head office guy. I had been asking if all the stores in Canada were supposed to be carrying these phones (Peterborough store says they don't sell them) I also asked about the "free phone" deal. This was his response.
The FREE phone offer we ran in May and June will be repeated in the month of September offering a FREE Nokia 1600 with purchase of $100 Speakout airtime or $75.00 off any Speakout phone.

September is only 3 weeks away. But if you really need the phone now, you can buy the 1112 at Petro Canada. They have lowered their price down to $60 and they have a promotion now with a $20 airtime card free.
And if you have enough petro points (79,000), they will give you the phone for free! But the airtime card is not included.

Chris, it's the same company that supplies both 7-11 and Petro Canada - Ztar Mobile. Refer to the home page for this website, the reference is at the bottom.
However, the two plans are NOT identical. With PetroCan, the airtime only lasts 180 days whereas 7-11 goes for 365 days. But the lowest PetroCan airtime card is $20 so if you use virtually no air time then it works out to $40 a year. With 7-11 the lowest airtime card is $25 but that's good for the full year. And PetroCan only has 2 phones, but 7-11 has 4. And airtime cards bought for Speakout don't work on PetroCan phones and vice versa.
Other than that, they seem to be the same. I only just activated my PetroCan phone this morning so I'll see how it goes.
Anybody else with thoughts on their experience with PetroCan phones?

I was thinking of going in tomorrow and getting a phone and then since I understand there is a 15 days return timeframe (please tell me if this is true or not) I can go into there after Sept. 1 and get the difference refunded back to me for the phone credit. And if there isn't a deal on Sept. 1, at least I'll still have the phone and wouldn't have had to do without one until then. Does anyone have a say on whether this would work? Also, which phone is recommended?

phoned 7-Eleven head office for Vancouver area, and they confirmed the Sat 1 Sept 07, Nokia 1600 free phone with purchase of $100 minutes / plus the $5 free minutes that comes with the phone. That would cost $100. plus tax, total.
He also said they will be bringing out a new phone with added features at the end of October, but "that's for the end of October." unquote.
