I bought a speakout phone $100 talktime + 2760 phone for about $150 or so with taxes. I asked the store clear if the phone is unlocked. She was kind enought to check it with her sim which i think was rogers and it worked. After i came home i phoned speak out and they asked me to phone nokia the person at nokia told me that if i insert a rogers sim and it works then it is unlocked.
Yes it did work so i registered the phone etc. Now i read Big Ang reply saying rogers sim works on SO, does not mean it is unlocked. So i used my Overseas sim and it said - restricted code required.
Please let me know what this means and where one can get a SO phone unlocked and the price.
Thank you

Here is an example of what you can do.

Is the Nokia 1661 locked?
I plan to buy one when I'm in Canada and can just purchase a SIM card from T-mobile in US when I return.
Does anyone know if this work?
Edit: Just read the post said the new Nokia 1661 is locked.
The only thing I can say about this is that today, July 14, 2009, I bought a $100 airtime card and got a $59 phone for half price. The sim works in my unlocked HTC TOUCH HD which was on Fido but they dollar you to death. It looks cheap but by the time you pay $35 for a Fido sim and an unannounced $35 administration fee plus a few others, I ended up so far paying about $80 just to get on their network since approximately 3- 4 days ago.
It works for me!

Sim lock and frequency bands are 2 different thing. To test whether a SO phone is locked or unlocked, you need to put a FIDO SIM CARD into the phone. If it works, it is unlocked. If it does not work, it is locked. You cannot use Rogers sim cards to test because
Speakout Sim card=Roger sim card= PetroCanada sim card.
All these cards will work on a SO phone whether the phone is locked or unlocked.
See this post:

The SO nokia 1661 I got on June 27 was locked. Other SO phones may be the same. Be aware.

This promotion is not wonderful. Last summer...
That was last summer. This is this summer. People who need SO this summer don't have the option of turning the clock back by a year.
However, if they're patient, according to SO, as posted elsewhere on this forum, the "buy $100 airtime, get free phone" promotion will be back for the Christmas season.

So which phones are included with the buy $100 airtime get a free phone promo?
Only the least expensive model. The promo is actually that you get $xx towards the phone when you buy $100 airtime, where $xx is enough to pay for the cheapest phone. If you want a better phone you've got $xx to apply towards it.

I am currently on PCM but do not like their new shorter credit life. A $25 credit now lasts only 120 days, and $50 for 180 days.
I am considering moving to SO but wanted to check with the experts first. Will I be able to port my PCM number, and if I buy an SO phone, will it be easy to sell these locked SO phones so I can continue to use my Nokia 6130 PCM phone?
Thanks for your input.

You can port your PCM number to SO. Selling your SO phone is of course always up to whoever is looking for that particular model, and the price. Various SO phones are sold frequently on this site, and elsewhere.

Thanks. The SO SIM should work with any unlocked GSM phone, correct. If so, I am tempted to just buy an SO Phone and SIM, port my old PCM number, and sell the new SO Phone. Buying an existing SIM card in the aftermarket will not enable me to port my PCM number, right?
Yes, the SO SIM will work in any unlocked GSM phone (that uses the North American 850/1900 bands)
I'm not entirely sure if an aftermarket sim will work, I can't see how what would stop it, because as long as the sim is active, I think the port should go through.

I don't see why not, especially since both SO and PCM are operated by the same MVNO, ztar. Note however that when you port your number from PCM SIM to SO SIM (a) the PCM SIM becomes worthless, i.e. you can't sell it and (b) you lose any remaining airtime on it.
