I foolishly renewed my Fido 3-year contract 18 months ago, and got a new high-end SonyEricsson phone on renewal....last Christmas, I bought my wife a SpeakOut phone with the December $ 100 deal, and we discovered how great it was through 2008, so this Christmas I bought a SpeakOut phone for myself for $ 100, and promptly ported my Fido # over to it, then I went to a cell shop here in Vancouver and had the Fido phone unlocked for $ 25, and switched the Speakout SIM card into it. PRESTO, a high-end cell phone for 20 cents a minute...this is absolutely the BEST deal for a casual user like me...Of course, I must pay Fido the $ 200 cancellation fee, but this is essentially the cost of the SonyEricsson phone...it will be recovered in 5 months, as I was paying Fido about $ 40 per month on the contract...

Welcome to SpeakOut and low cost pay-as-you-go cellphone non-plans. Yes, unless you do an awful lot of talking and texting, SO beats the big players by a country mile.

Hi, IHateFido, if you can negotiate a $25 / month retention plan with Fido, you will probably be able to sell your then desirable Fido SIM with a nice monthly cell phone plan (I have friends who are bigger talkers who would love such a plan) AND get out of the $200 cancellation fee.
Edit a few hours later: Nevermind, I'm an idiot. You clearly stated that you ported your number. Sorry for my irrelevant comment.
