Thanks.

I presume that the PCM phone will also include the SIM card.

How easy is it to sell the phone? Is it unlocked? I prefer to use my own unlocked phone. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can get a PetroCan phone, or at least the airtime, from any PetroCanada station across the country.

All the ones I go to print up the prepaid airtime from a little machine (regardless if it's Fido, Rogers, Bell, etc), so if the gas station has that setup (and they most likely will), then you can buy airtime from them.

Both PetroCan and Speakout are operated by the same company, so the coverage is the same.

How easy is it to sell the phone? Well, that's the million dollar question! All SpeakOut and PetroCan phones are unlocked (to the best of my knowledge) so that's a plus. All of the phones offered, except the Nokia 5200, are dual-band GSM that will only work in N.America, so that limits your market. Also, you can't ask too much money for the phone, cause any smart Canuck won't buy it when they can go down the street and buy a new themselves, and it will have a SIM card that they can sell for a pretty penny.

I honestly can't see you getting more than $20 (if that) for a Nokia 1208 or a Nokia 1600. If you can get more, more power to ya.

A Nokia 2630 or 2760 might be easier to sell, but you may not be able to make up the difference in price (it effectively costs $36 more once you factor in the extra airtime you get).

Maybe you can find an existing Rogers/Fido/Speakout/PetroCan client that just wants to upgrade their phone before you buy one. That way you guys can agree on a price, one of you buy the package, and then sells the part he doesn't want to the other guy.

I should clarify.

The Nokia 5200 (only offered by Speakout) is a triband phone. It has the 2 N.American GSM bands (850 and 1900), and 1 of the 2 European bands (1800). So it should be able to work in Europe (with a SIM other than SpeakOut or PetroCan) and possibly other parts in the world too.

hey, aren't we getting a slight deal if we're texting (SMS) if you buy $75 or $100?

b/c u said then for $75, we get a $90something credit.

then it's a bit less than 5cents/text..?

OK, just in the nick of time 7-11 put together a decent website and clarified that 20 cent/min is still available. So I am a somewhat happy customer again. Their website claims incoming international texts are 5 cents ... mine have always been 25 cents.

Yes. I don't get this part too. According to the this site's FAQ, it would seem to say it is under 5 cents per text. But this site and the 7/11 site says it is 5 cents

It's purely a matter of how you choose to do the math.

$25 and $50 say .25/min
$75 and $100 say .20/min with a "*".

Down below: *Effective rate per minute

We're assuming that "Effective" means everyone's still getting charged the new .25/min rate, but $75 and $100 get 25% more than they offically paid (.25/.20=1.25), so they get $93.75 and $125.00 added to their account.

But text is still .05, so instead of getting (potentially) 1500 and 2000 for $75 and $100, you'd get 1875 and 2500 total messages, so it's "Effective"ly 1500/1875*.05=.04 per message.

There, happy? You made my brain hurt!

I didn't have time to read through this entire thread, so it's possible that someone's already mentioned this - if so then my apologies for the redundancy.

I just purchased $50 of SO time, unaware of the rate hike, and when I entered it into my phone my new balance was up $62. Is SO offering everyone the upgraded balance based on $0.25 per minute for an introductory period?

Just wondering if anyone's had any experience with the lower denominations, or talked to customer support.

Hi,
FYI, I ended up getting the PCM Nokia 2630. Since I was in the Near North Ontario, and slightly out of the coverage area, I truly had no coverage. However, the camera works great. Only problem is that you have to have a bluetooth capable computer to transfer your pics. This is my new challenge. As long as I can get this figured out I will be quite happy considering I received 100 bonus minutes when purchasing the phone, giving me a total of 120 initial minutes. I plan to use the texting at only 5 cents a minute.
THANKS for your help everyone.

If your PC doesn't have Bluetooth built-in (most desktops don't; many notebooks do) you can buy a BT adapter that plugs into USB. I've seen them for about $10 at places like Tiger Direct, Factory Direct, Canada Computers, etc.

Or this one for $5 if you can wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive from Hong Kong.

Accroding to http://speakout7eleven.ca/pages/rates/, the rate for $50 is 25 cents/min. Only $75 and $100 voucher have effective rate of 20 cents/min. Was Brian just lucky, or what?

What I meant to say is that the official 7-11 site says the rate for $50 voucher is 25 cents per minute, therefore loading a $50 coupon should only increase the balance by $50, not $62.50. But Brian got $62 credit for his $50 voucher.

ok, I got. with July promotion, $50 voucher gives $50+$0.25*50=$62.5, the extra credit is for 50minute bonus, not for $0.20/min gross up.

Therefore in July, if you topup a $75 voucher, you can expect to get
$75*(25/20)+$0.25*50=$106.25.
The *(25/20) is for the "$0.20/min effective rate".

Unfortunately, I believe that the July promo only applies to the $50 top-up. So if you get a $75 voucher, you will get $93.25 (75 * 25 / 20) added to your account.
