I am leaning towards PCM's Nokia 2630 also. It's very thin. Does anyone know what the August PCM promotion might be, because I can wait 2 weeks if the promotion will be good.

This is hilarious. Did they not just charge 25c for 25; 50 increments and only 20c for 75; 100 just to see how people are re-descovering math?

Really, Fido charges 30c for their 10$ and 20c for their others. Why couldn't SO do the same but rather had to complicate by charging for all 25c and then give extra money for their 75;100?

It's a one lump sum balance, it doesn't get much simpler.

Charging one set of rates all the time and giving extra money on certain denominations is a perfectly fine. My only problem is the LD rate hike.

I'm new to this, so let me ask, I don't live anywhere near a 7-11 and the nearest Petro Can that sells phones is 45 min away. If I buy a phone in London and live in Owen Sound, how do I get a local number so that everything isn't long distance? Thanks for all the great info and discussions!!!

You can buy the phone and airtime anywhere. Then call customer service, tell them you live in Owen Sound and need a local number. They'll assign you one without charge.

I finally took the plunge and bought the PCM Nokia 2630. It's much thinner than the 2760. The rates, esp. for long distance, is what made the deal for me vs. SO.

I haven't seen many reports on how satisfied people are with PCM. What are the most common troubles/disadvantages over SO?

the 30c vs. 45c long distance rate, and 20c vs. 25c local rate, made me choose PCM. yes, the lower denomination refills last only 6 months, but I imagine I'd have to refill by that time anyway.

I live in Southern Ontario, and most of my calling is out of my area code, so now I'm paying $0.45 instead of $0.30 / minute. I also have $150 on my phone which is now worth $100. What a rip-off. I've recommended this plan to a lot of family and friends, but now I'll tell them all and anyone else who'll listen not to buy it. Even if it was the cheapest (which it isn't) this kind of unannounced price hike really rubs me the wrong way- it demonstrates _unethical_ business practises imho. Good-bye 7-11. Nice site, Peter!

I added a $50 voucher just yesterday without knowing the difference in rate hike up to 25cents/min. If I now add a $75 or $100 voucher on top of the minutes I already have does that turn all my minutes even the initial $50 voucher minutes to to the effective 20cents/min?

No.

Airtime for everyone is 25¢/min. The $25 and $50 vouchers are credited at nominal value but $75 and $100 vouchers are credited at a "grossed-up" value to make the effective rate 20¢/min.

For example, a $100 voucher is credited as $125 of airtime. $125 of airtime at 25¢/min is 500 minutes, same as $100 at 20¢/min.

If most of your calls are long distance, it would be wise to sign up with a long distance plan, such as JustDial.ca

I did and am saving a bundle.

Ok, I did some digging and it turns out the reason for the price increase was Rogers raising the cost per minute on airtime. So, the fact that they keep the old local rate effective on the higher cost cards is pretty cool of them, I think. Plus, the text rate is still good, and the 365 day expiry date on purchased airtime can't really be beat.

Where did you dig this info from?
Does that mean Petro Canada Mobile will increase its rate soon?

I have two ($125) vouchers for sale. Removed by admin. Please create a separate topic in the phone exchange forum.

If someone calls you on your 7-11 phone and you don't pick it up (miss call), do you get charged?

What if someone calls you and you hit the disconnect button? Do you get charged with airtime?

When someone calls and they leave a message, I THINK you get charged for airtime. It's like that with most prepaid plans, but I think I remember hearing that you don't get charged with Speakout. Honestly, I don't pay too much attention to it.

If someone calls you and you press the hangup key instead of the pickup key, then you should not be charged. If you hit the pickup key and start the conversation, and then accidently hit the hangup key a second later, then you are charged.

No.

As long as you don't pick up the call (press the Talk button) you shouldn't be charged.

AFAIK if someone leaves you a VM message you aren't charged as long as you don't try to play it back using SO, e.g. you can play it back for free using a landline.

I would like to have this thing cleared out once and for all. So do you get charged if someone leaves you voicemail or no? Some people say you do, some say you don't. I know that with Rogers Paygo you get charged airtime even if someone leaves voicemail for you.
What about SO? Does anyone want to try and sacrifice their 20c ? 😀
