We bought a PANTECH C3 Pay As You Go Wireless Phone from The Source for our daughter for Christmas.
With an instant $50 off and a $50 mail-in rebate we will pay about $45 + tax for the phone.
It comes with $10 of Rogers airtime.
Our daughter lives in Toronto and wants the phone only for emergency calls or as a portable pay phone when none are available.
She's not a big phone user so likely won't run up big bills. She doesn't even really want to give the number out to friends.
She travels occasionally to other Canadian cities and once on a while the USA but again would only use the phone there as an emergency phone.
We're getting her this phone as a convenience and a safety measure.
We don't want to saddle her with something that will end up costing her a lot of money!
We were going to buy the $100 Rogers voucher - good for 365 days.
Now we're looking at your info about the 7-11 $100 card and we're pretty confused.
We've never used a cell phone ourselves, don't understand how the rates work and need help figuring out which would be the best deal and what the pros and cons are.
Does anyone have any advice for us?
Rogers vs 7-11?
$100 cards vs shorter periods??
Payment Plans?????
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!

If your daughter will be using her phone < 20 minutes per month (ie one 5 minute call / week) than going with Rogers and buying their $100 voucher makes sense. Rogers has a lot of plans but it seems that the $100 for 365 days revert to 40 cent per minute after 60 days. If your daughter's monthly usage is going to be between 20 and 95 minutes / month (probably a little more realistic) then you are better with SPEAK OUT or Petro-Canada as their rate is 20 cents per minute and a flat 30 cents per minute for long distance in Canada / US. If her use will be >95 and <220 minutes / month then look into Virgin Mobile which has a plan of 200 anytime minutes for $20 / month. The problem with Speak Out, PetroCanada and Virgin is that they won't ROAM in the US and if this is essential than you are probably stuck with Rogers or one of the more expensive carriers.
