Thanks for the details. Yeah, the data plan is expensive but it's still the lowest cost option for a low-use phone with some data. My wife talks maybe 15 minutes/month on the phone, just quick updates or change in plans, nothing lengthy. She does like the ability to check email when out and about and away from wifi.
I've un-installed a bunch of apps from her phone and will see if I can get her data usage down below 100 MB/month with the data left turned on. I wonder if that's even possible.

btw my usage is exactly the same(email/im) and netting 70MB/month.
With the new 100 MB data plan, my monthly cost will go to $10+$3 calling + taxes so may be $14/month.
Tonight I deleted the email account from the mail app and will use only gmail. The email app was the biggest consumer of data according to the data usage meter on the phone. That's encouraging that you use only 70 MB/month so there is hope.

Two weeks ago I got a text saying my UMB has been retired, and to check out the website about the new data plans. My UMB was set to expire today. I was prepared to sign up for a $35 value plan today. Then, this morning got a text that my service feature has been renewed and will expire on 01/11/2014. Logged in, and I see "Unlimited Browsing" and my accound has been debited $10. So, I don't know. See what happens when I go over 100 MB

After 10 hours of running around in the city and just turning data on when I needed to check email mostly, I see I used about 8MB. I'm aftraid if I have to use Google to navigate around it's really going to chew up the data, I guess it's back to the Old Days and trying to Shoe-Horn a third party app with embedded maps like Garmin or Tom Tom or something.

I use OsmAnd maps and quite like it. You download the required maps on to your phone and you need no data link to navigate. (You do, however, need it to do a search, it seems.) Other options are Mapfactor and Navfree. All of these use their modified versions of Open Source Maps. Maps are quite large, so an SD card is probably a good idea.
There is a bit of a learning curve with all of them.

You're right! 'My Data Manager' app on my phone tells me that I have now used 16MB for the period. However Speakout shows me this right now:
Thanks for pointing that out, when you told me to do that I thought I was going to get an unpleasant surprise and see that even more data had been used. Any thoughts as to why the large descrepancy and how to tweak the Android app?
(In the meantime right now, I'm trying to decide if I should install 'Skobbler', or 'Navfree' on my phone)

UMB lives on!
Same here, I got the service retired msg, then later got the service renewed message. Just checked online and sure enough it shows UMB with 22 days remaining. This is the 3rd or 4th renewal since it was supposed to be discontinued.

I also got the UMB renewal. I guess I'll wait till next month to find out how the new data packages work for me. The UMB has been pretty great - most of my iPhone features work, and I don't need to worry about going over. I wish there was some sliding scale where the first few mb were expensive, but got cheaper as you used more - I don't mind paying per MB, but do not like having to budget my usage or try to predict how much I will use in the future. True "pay as you go" would be great.

you are paying per MB with the New Speakout Data Plan if you go over 100Mb/month. i think the overage charge is 10 cents per Mb? and $10/100Mb is 10 cent/Mb
where it's not True "pay as you go" if you only use 60Mb in 30 days you still pay $10. thats 17 cents/Mb

For travel to the US I had bought Navigon (Garmin) US&Canada. It was probably the most expensive app I've bought at somewhere around $50. But it was a deal compared to buying a dedicated GPS unit. There are other navigation options as others have mentioned that don't use a data connection.

Reporting back on reducing data usage:
Deleting the accounts in the Android mail app and just using gMail helped alot. It's nice the Android data usage has a rolling 7 day report. The past week I used 29 MB of data, 18 MB of that was for Google Play Store and Google Play Services. I thought I had those set for update over wifi only. Does anyone know why they are still using data or how to limit those apps to wifi only? If I can solve the 18 MB of data usage by Play Store and Play Services, then my usage is down around 11 MB/week.

Anyone know what this means? The current UMB has 3 days to go and expires Dec 25, 2013. Do I get one more month with the last expiry date being Jan 25, 2013?
Seen on my SpeakOut account info online:
"Your current Value Plan/Add-On with Browsing will expire in 1 renewal period starting this month"
