We got 2 renewals of UMB so I waited to see what would happen on the Dec renewal date. Coincidentally on that date our hydro went out, after getting through the ice storm without losing power that sucked. So I fires up the tablet to see what's up and nada for connectivity. After the power came back I checked and the UMB had not renewed and I had no option to renew it. So I enabled the new data plan.
I checked it an hour or so later and it was up. Loaded 1 web page, the Environment Canada weather page and all was fine. Checked my usage and it was 1 Mb for 1 stinking weather web page and it certainly did not feel any faster than it had on UMB. Yeah, this new data plan is going to be just wonderful.
Once the $30 that's left on this SIM is gone I'll be going elsewhere for browsing. This is not the cheapest place for pay go voice service so when the other SIMs I have are empty I'll be moving that service elsewhere as well. Adios Speakout, it was good while it lasted.

I wasn't sure if this would be the appropriate place to post this info, but my spouse brought to my attention that there is again a plan for Gov't employees on offer. Apparently they do aggressively confirm your employment status by so you can't fake it. My spouse seemed keen on it until I pointed out it was still a 3 year contract and while it would give her a lot for $50.00/month, it's lot's more than she presently ever would use. Sometimes it's important to differentiate what you really need, from what you may simply want, but not need. For example if you're working in a building with free use of land lines, and internet access that you can use to check your email during your breaks, why the heck would you need to use your mobile? Anyway, here's what they are getting on that deal, personally I would not switch from SO even with the crappy data deal they presently offer because I do not want to be committed to $50.00/month for 3 years, but this may at least be of interest to some:
$50 per month
3year term – (The recent change to 2 year terms only apply to consumer plans, not corporate/business plans, which this offer is)350 Local minute
1000 local incoming
additional airtime $0.10/min
250 Canadian long distance minutes
Rogers to Rogers unlimited nation-wide
Unlimited 6pm to 7am evenings and weekend
Unlimited messaging
5GB data
call display and voicemailUnconfirmed – Unlimited Canadian Long-Distance for extra $5/month

It seems like all or nothing. I've only been to the city once, and otherwise just use data when I pop out for an hour locally. As a result, with 6 days left, I have 90MB available. My spouse, with 7 days left, has 78MB remaining. That is also really annoying in that we loose it in 6 or 7 days rather than have it carry over so we could use it when we really need it the following month for example. Seem like SO's plan is not keeping anyone happy, nor is anyone of the opinion that it is a fair plan.

In keeping with me using the per minute talk option, the per mb data option would be good rather than blowing $10 every month for a few mb.
I don't understand the logic unless they want to move everyone to monthly options. If they try I will be gone as there are per use options out there besides them.

Is anyone here old enough to remember the 70's? I recall when I got a touch-tone phone back around then, and Telus charged me an extra $3.00 a month to use digital over the standard analog dialer. I also seem to recall a decade or so later, you had to pay extra if you wanted to use analog equipment. Some things never change, especially with Canadian Telco providers assuming it is their right to shamelessly exploit the consumers.

I would love a more true per/MB option, but if you go over the 100MB, it is priced the same per MB after the $10, so if the next few months see me doing close to 100MB each month, it will be workable. If it turns out I am doing a whole bunch more, or a whole lot less, then I may look to see what other options there are.

I'm not that old, but I do remember that 10 years ago, I paid $90 for a land line and the WORST 1.5mb line from telus. That got reduced to $45 with a 6mb line, and this year I now pay $30 to have all my various alternate phone/internet/tv needs.
I cringe at the thought that I paid the equivalent of $180 in 2013 dollars what I got for 10 years ago.
And my cell phone useage has switched from $60/year since 2008 to probably $20/year, and that's with a switch to a different carrier with a little know how I get unlimited incoming/ 1c/min outgoing.
Thankfully, I don't do data.

Exactly, same boat here. When I finally dumped Telus a few years ago I was paying almost $150.00/month for everything. Now I pay about $50.00 for everything (meaning phone and internet, and not cell phone service of course), and Telus still gets $10.00 of that for the rental I have to pay to use their line to bring the ADSL into my house.

You're right! 'My Data Manager' app on my phone tells me that I have now used 16MB for the period. However Speakout shows me this right now:
[Image Can Not Be Found]Thanks for pointing that out, when you told me to do that I thought I was going to get an unpleasant surprise and see that even more data had been used. Any thoughts as to why the large descrepancy and how to tweak the Android app?
(In the meantime right now, I'm trying to decide if I should install 'Skobbler', or 'Navfree' on my phone)
Can you check the large descrepancy still there, I fund mine corrected itself a lot yesterday. I " lost" 50ishMB .

I just had a look as suggested. This is after I got a notice on my own phone this time that my mobile usage had gone past the 100MB limit because I had used 40MB in one day. I had to force data on just to check mail each time. So I just went and had a look at this account:

and this is what I have left:

Thanks. My account went from 30MB to 76MB used in one day and my own phone count went from 108MB to 118MB.
I did a search, found someone mentioned this :Your iPhones data counter would be instant, whereas SO's data counter may take a bit to update. .

In my case it's a bit strange. Earlier in the week I went for a hike up Sulphur Mtn., and as there was lots of data left, decided to stream BBC live for awhile just to use up some data. Ended up not being too long as the program that was on at the time was not what I wanted, but what I did use did not seem to get counted, or if it did, not the same amount that the phone said was being streamed. I haven't yet bookmarked teh SO Web Page on my mobile, but it looks like when you're out and about and you get that over data message from your App, that's about the only way to see what is actually going on, but I wonder in fact how long it does take for them to update the stats.

I was a SO customer too.
Now I will just let my credit to expire slowly and only using it for emergencies. At least I can still keep the number active by just buying 25$ worth.
I switched to a tablet plan. I get 1GB for 20$, then use Fongo for all my voice calls and texting needs. So much worth it.
