Promotion vs. expiry

Hi all,

I'm seriously looking at SO as my cell phone option, as I currently do not have a cell phone, am a light user (emergency/check in only), and have no desire to get locked into a sucky contract.

I know that every year SO has a promotion where you can get a $75 credit towards a phone if you buy $100 of airtime. Previous discussions had led to the suggestion of getting two $50 vouchers instead of a single $100, the idea being that you activate the first one either immediately or once the initial included airtime is running out, then activate the second one before the 90 day expiry occurs, in order to roll over all of the previously unused minutes, and thereby getting an extra 3 months before everything expired. However, if you get the full $100 voucher you get extra airtime (that "floating" $25 that is credited in order to align the per minute rates), so if you were to do the two $50 vouchers you would not receive this extra $25.

Am I correct in this thinking? And if that is the case, is it better to not worry about the extra 3 months you might get in favour of the extra $25, assuming you do not use too many minutes a month (and therefore would have to worry about expiry periods)?

Would it seem feasible to try and get one $75 and one $25 voucher, in order to take advantage of both the extra credited airtime as well as the increased expiry time? I n my mind this would give you a total of 475 minutes (based on the $93.75 with credit for the $75, plus the $25 - I think I have that number correct) and then you would get those minutes for 15 months instead of 12 (which gives you a "monthly" allowance of 31.67). Getting the full $100 voucher would be 500 minutes/12 months = 41.66, vs 2x$50/15 months = 26.67, which makes it seem as though the $100 option gives you the most "minutes per month"

Does my SO math seem logical? Or am I figuring this out in the wrong way? I just want to know what would give me the most airtime for the best deal and longest expiry period.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Am I correct in this thinking?

Yes.

is it better to not worry...

I think so. Keep it simple. You are getting good cellphone service at a good price. If you try too hard you could perhaps misplace the voucher or forget to activate it in time, etc. and end up losing far more than you'd gain. Part of the difficulty you're going to have in reaching any firm conclusion is knowing how much air time you'll really use once you get a cellphone, especially since you don't have one now. There's no point in maximizing airtime if you don't use it and there's no point in making calls just because you have extra airtime available.

Note also that the $50/$50 or $75/$25 voucher split is at the 7-11 store's discretion. You may have to try several stores and may end up wasting more time and burning more gas than you save.

I agree with Bylo. When I bought the "$100 voucher with free phone" promotion, every one of the stores I went to or called were specifically told they have to sell the single $100 voucher. No $50 and $50 etc.

This is different from store to store. I had purchased 2 phones from 2 different stores. They both sold me $75+$25 vouches.

So, anyone have a sense of when the next big promotion that you are speaking of will hit the stores? Is it same time every year? If so, when was the last one?

They usually have it 2 times a year. First one starts August 1, and the one after starts for the Christmas season.
