The first time I ever used a SpeakOut SIM was on 2009-03-13 during a recent visit to Saint John, NB. I had purchased the SIM in August 2008 and it came with a balance on it already. I made a single call to the US and stay on till I ran out of time. This was roughly 13 minutes. The problem I am trying to figure out is how much balance comes with an newly activated SIM? 13 minutes at the rates shown on the website sounds like I had 5.85 $ on the SIM. Is this normal? I thought most phone+SIM combos come with 10 or 25 $ on it.
How much time should I expect to get calling the US for each top-up? Is it worth using SpeakOut to call the US as long as I can get another top-up and apply them at the start of my next visit to Canada?
Also, considering on my 1st call on the 13th, I got a message right before being connected saying my SpeakOut account has just been activated. When is my expiration date? 365 days after 2009-03-13 or 365 days after the purchase date (I see an SMS on the SIM with a voice-mail password of 11111 that was dated 2008-08-05)?
Thanks...

You must have purchased this SIM privately because SO doesn't sell SIMs; you have to buy a phone+SIM. How much credit did the seller tell you was on the SIM?

SO's phone+SIM combos come with $5.
BTW you seem to be a visitor from the US. SO US is a different offering from SO Canada. The SIMs, the carriers, the rates and coverage are all different.

If you buy a new phone and SIM, the SIM comes with $5.
If you were to use it to call the US, I'd recommend using a separate long distance card since the per minute rate would be cheaper. Buy a $5 long distance card from a convenience store, and you can use it from a landline (the cheapest) or from any cell.
To find out the expiry date and the balance left on a card call *777 on your phone.
I would assume that the expiry date was a year from when you start using the phone, but I could be wrong.

Correct in that I bought it privately and that I am a visitor from the US who goes to Canada very infrequently (twice a year or so), so SpeakOut seems to be the best deal for me (with the exception of the lack of any 7-Eleven stores east of Ontario). Is it OK to exhaust the balance as long as it is refilled within 365 days of the last top-up?
I am also aware that the SpeakOut offered in the US is different and that no roaming between each other is possible (that sucks).

From the FAQ:
13a. What happens if my airtime expires of my balance reaches $0?
If your airtime expires: You have less than 24 hours to refill or your SIM card number becomes void and you need to buy another SO SIM.
If your balance reaches $0 (before your airtime has expired): You have 45 days (or until your airtime expires, whichever is earlier) to refill after your balance reaches $0 or your SIM card number becomes void and you need to buy another SO SIM.

Crap. Unfortunately as I am in the US and will not be in Canada again for some months, I have no way to find out if my balance is above zero or not. Should it have hit zero if it was activated and on my very 1st call (which was to the US), ran out of time? Are there even a few cents on it?
If this is the case, perhaps SpeakOut may not be for me at all and I may just need to stick with roaming with my operator (T-Mobile USA) until I spend an extended period of time west of Quebec (all my trips to Canada have been east of Ontario). Other Canadian options seem to have even worse deals that expire in much shorter amounts of time.
That being said, is there anything I can do with the SIM now?

I've looked thru the info that came with my phone and on the Speakout website, and I can find no reference to this 24 hour expiry time. I only see reference to having to top up within 45 days.
Could some one please show me where the 24 hr. time limit is mentioned on the Speakout site?
its 45 days get someone to buy you a voucher and pay them with paypal drwho2006aat gmaildotcom or buy a voucher on this forum
