I am a senior and was given a Samsung cell phone (3-4 years old). I spend 4 consecutive months in the Vancouver area each year and need the cell mainly for emergency and convenience Please advise most economical program to take. Where can I then purchase sim card and prepaid minutes?

Thanks in advance

First, is this a GSM phone, i.e. does it accept SIM cards? If the phone originally was used with Rogers or Fido then it's GSM. If it's from Bell or Telus then it's not.

Second, if the phone was originally used with Fido then it's probably locked to them and won't work with SO, PCM or Rogers. (If it's ex-Rogers then it'll work fine.)

You can't get a SO or PCM SIM from either of those companies, however, there are people on this forum who have SIMs for sale for ~$25. Once you have the SIM you can get airtime for it at 7-11 (SO) or a PC gas station (PCM.) Note that you need to buy at least $25 from SO or $100 from PCM to get airtime that doesn't expire for 1 year.
