Hi I'm a bit new to the whole cell phone game.

I recently found SpeakOut wireless as well as presidents choice mobile. I really seem to be leaning towards these prepaid methods vs the traditional contracts, monthly bills, and paying for minutes I'm not going to use.

I'm looking to have unlimited (or close to) texting and just talk when I need to.

I've been doing some research and I just want to double check that I have my facts straight.

SpeakOut
$0.25 per minute.
$.45 per minute long distance.
$10/month - 2500 outgoing text messages (more then enough for me).
Additional $1.25 per month for 911.
Plus Tax.

Presidents Choice
$0.20 per minute.
$.45 per minute long distance.
$0.50 per day - unlimited text messages - approx $15/month
Additional $0.50 per month for 911.
Plus Tax.

I was also looking to confirm that for either service you can top up your account with a max of $100 which expires after 365 days, and that top up can be done online or by buying cards in-store?

One last thing, I'd like to get a phone that has a slide open keyboard… I noticed that SpeakOut doesn't offer any phone like this, I don't know much about cell phones so I was wondering what my options might be if I decide to go with SpeakOut, and try to fine a cheap compatible phone.

I also love to hear if anyone has ever had any major problem dealing with either of these companies.

Thanks!

It depends where you are, but either President's Choice or SpeakOut may have a better network.

As for top-ups, any top-up with SpeakOut will last a year. Currently though, you may only buy SpeakOut top-ups at a retail 7-Eleven store. They are looking to implement on-line top-ups soon though.

If you don't like the phones offered by SpeakOut, you can buy a compatible phone, and pop your SpeakOut sim in it. As long as it's unlocked, and operates at least on the 850/1900 MHz North American GSM bands.

I was with President's Choice for a short time before I came to SpeakOut. One thing I didn't like was that their top-ups last a maximum of 2 months. With SpeakOut any top-up lasts a year. As I said before, it also depends on coverage. SpeakOut's coverage may be better for some, and President's Choice may be better for others. There are pros and cons on both sides.

With Speakout you can top with $25 and it will expire after 365 days. President's choice mobile has a $100 card that expires after 365 days. You can top up President's choice mobile by phone with a credit card, or buy a voucher at Loblaws and it's affiliated stores. You can only buy Speakout vouchers at 7-11 stores.

Service from both of them seem fine. Rogers, and Bell are complete asshats though, and they work on making their partner's lives miserable. My miserable experiences were always Rogers and Bell related, and Speakout and President's choice mobile eventually got it sorted out. I will give you an example.

Right now, I cannot use data on President's choice mobile SIM's because Bell only currently allows the data to work on certain phones. President's choice mobile is working on a fix. It took me 3 weeks to even register a President's choice mobile SIM on the Bell network. They fixed that one.

As for a phone, as long as it is unlocked, and uses the 3G HSDPA 850/1900 mhz frequencies, the world is your oyster. That phone will work on any Canadian SIM card, except for Wind and Mobilcity. If you see a phone you like, let us know, and I can comment on it's suitability.

iamdrumming's info on President's choice mobile is slightly out of date. You can now get $100 vouchers that last 365 days. That did not use to be the case.

As for coverage, Rogers tends to cover Upper Canada better, Bell tends to cover the rest of Canada better. Speakout is a Mobile virtual network operator for Rogers, President's choice mobile is a Mobile virtual network operator for Bell.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I live in southwestern Ontario just north of London. Not sure f bell or rogers is better around here.

Does anyone know how the PC unlimited texting works?

Would I have to sign up for it or do they just take $0.50 off my account everyday?

Also wondering If I have a day when I only send two text would they just change me the $0.15 for each then in stead of the $0.50. If this is the case I guess once I sent 4 or more texts the bill would just be capped at $0.50 for the day, can anyone confirm this?

I am sure either network will be adequate for your needs.

With President's choice Mobile, you have to subscribe to get the 50 cent a day unlimited texting. You will get charged 50 cents every day no matter what your daily volume until you run out of money or unsubscribe. I would assume the limit is around 2500 texts a month, but I doubt they would bother you unless the network is consistently being congested. Right now you have to call them up to subscribe and unsubscribe any service, which is annoying. They will probably have a website in the works for self service eventually.

asteeper,

Here's a great site I found years ago. It shows you which provider has more towers in your area. More towers = better coverage.
