What is the expiry time for the 20 minutes of startup airtime that comes with a new phone? 30 days? 90? 365? (I think I read all these numbers somewhere, but maybe I am mixing up different companies).

30 days. Buy a $25 card and you can carry over the minutes. $25 cards expire after 365 days. I would wait til the end of the 30 days to apply the $25 card.

Is the expiry at 11:59 p.m.? For example, if the airtime expires on August 29, do I have to refill on August 28 to keep the unused minutes? Or can I just refill any time on August 29?

It's never good to cut it that close. I usually top-up a day before the expiry, just to be safe.
