Hello,

A few months back I decided to go with PetroCan. Around a week after I got it, PetroCan switched their rates from 20c to 25c, and around 2 months after that my phone's sound stopped working except with speakerphone. When I called the PetroCan people, they told me that I would have to warranty the phone with the manufacturer which would mean I'm without a phone for a couple weeks. This is not a viable option for me. So I was thinking of buying a nokia 1661 with $100 airtime from 711, switching my number over, then warrantying my current phone (nokia 2630). That way I would be back to 20c/365 days and the phone would only cost $30. I only have like $2 left on my PetroCan account so no big deal there. Anyways, just thought that I'd run it by you guys to make sure I'm not missing something or if there's a better option. Opinions? Also, has anyone tried the nokia 1661? Is it decent at all?

Thanks,
Matt

The SIM swap will work fine since, even if the new phone is locked, it will be locked to the same network. If you want to confirm that, you could ask a 7-11 clerk to let you try your PCM SIM in the 1661 before you buy it. Some clerks will and some won't.

Once you get your 2630 you can put the SO SIM in either phone.

That's probably the best idea.

One thing though. The Nokia 1661 uses Nokia's operating system for cheap phones (Series 30) while your current phone uses a slightly better operating system (Series 40). You may want to get a Nokia 1680 instead which uses the same OS (Series 40) as your current phone, if something like that matters to you.

Thanks for your help. I think that I'm going to get the 1661 and the $100 voucher.

@Big Ang: I was considering that but read that the 1680 was a bit of a disappointment when compared to the cheaper 1208 in a reputable looking review. It will likely just be a temporary/backup phone until my 2630 gets warrantied, but this said I'd prefer to get something which is half-decent.

Hmm. After I get a $10 referral when considering that the phone already has $5 on it, the phone will only cost me something like $15 as I'm getting it for half price. Not too bad.

One more consideration is if the batteries in any of the SO phones are compatible with your 2630. If so then even if you never use your new SO you've at least got a spare battery. The same applies to the AC charger, especially if you want the ability to recharge your phone at two locations or want to have a charger in your travel bag at all times so you never leave on a trip without it, etc.
