My hubby and I are starting the next stage of our lives as full time RVers in our motorhome. We will be living 6 mths in Canada and 6 in the US. Is it possible to get reasonable, dependable cell phone service and rates for both - with one provider and phone? We would like to be able to have our kids and friends contact us wherever we are and visa versa without breaking the bank.

Thanks to any and all who reply.

Jane

Hello Jane,

Generally when Canadian phones roam in the USA, you will pay high roaming fees. I would suggest getting 1 phone for Canada, and getting another phone (or sim card only if you have an unlocked phone) for the USA.

When in Canada, I recommend Speak Out Wireless. The coverage is generally good around Canada. They are lacking around the prairies though, and out east, in Newfoundland. Generally, I think they have better coverage than Bell across Canada.

For the USA, I would recommend a prepaid solution, such as Tracfone, or Net10. With Tracfone, any call you make across the USA costs the same, as long as it's a phone that deducts 1 unit/minute. Some older phones deduct 2 units/minute.

Tracfone does not own it's own towers. It is an MVNO, just like Speak Out. Tracfone also has many roaming agreements with cell providers. Say if your Tracfone was a phone that uses the Verizon network, and you entered an area that uses the AllTel wireless network, the phone would switch to AllTel. I have found Tracfone's coverage to be excellent in the USA.

Not if you want the lowest rates. In that case you will need an unlocked GSM phone (e.g. the Nokia 1208 that SpeakOut offers in Canada) plus
1. A SpeakOut SIM and prepaid plan for Canada
- and -
2. Another SIM and prepaid plan for use in the US.

Each SIM will have a different phone number so that friends and family will have to try both numbers. Both AT&T and T-Mobile offer SIMs and prepaid plans for use in the US. Unlike SpeakOut those plans can roam in Canada but the airtime is rather expensive. There have been other threads on this forum that discuss these sorts of issues.

Thanks for the info. We had been told the best way was with 2 phones and I guess that's how we'll do it. The info on providers is great and I will definately use it when we get ready to leave on our first adventure.

We travel back and forth between the US a lot. We bought a T mobile sim pay as you go on ebay. When we cross the border we just switch sims from our speakout GSM unlocked phone. We are very happy with the coverage and service. 10 cents a minute (and $1/day when used) and free calls between 2 tmobile phones. No roaming or long distance charges in the USA .At &t has almost the same plan on their gophones. These are $12 at any USA walmart. We tried that for awhile. I think the plan you choose must fit your needs so what is good for us may not work with you. Our family in the US that use their phones alot for business say Verizon has the least dropped calls. Maybe they have a plan that suits you. A great place to compare is http://www.howardforums.com

Consumer Reports agrees. The problem with Verizon, however, is that they don't use GSM. That means you'd have to have two phones, two chargers, etc. The advantage of T-Mob and AT&T is that because they're GSM you need only one unlocked phone plus the two SIMs.

I just got the Speakout deal a few weeks ago($75 credit toward a phone with $100 airtime) and picked up a Nokia 2670, so $116 got me the phone and a year.

I also got onto Ebay and picked up a T-mobile SIM card for $10. That is the way you should go.

I was even able to activate the T-Mobile SIM while in Canada through the Rogers network. I was also very lucky that t-m had a promotion on and this card being from a recent phone purchase, sold through phone dealer, I get $10 a month added to my T-mobile account for 3 months. So $10 = 3.34 + 30 = 33.34 airtime at 33 minute.
