Looks like one of the main reason to subscribe to SO is out the window. I wonder how many subscribers will opt out of SO
Many people I know have SO just for the 365 day expiry (and a cheap emergency phone). Not everyone used UMB or needs data.
though those people would not top up 100. SO definitely used some tactics here. I received multiple 'reminder' email about the 25 bonus expiry but nothing about this and this one is announcement AFTER the bonus offer.
The net effect is if people are thinking top up to cover their UMB usage, they end up having more balance than needed otherwise. Sure it can still be used over time(or for the new rate) but obviously not something it is intended for.

Today's ethics. We'll see what they announce but I am another that topped up and fell for the promo.
So you can promote the big purchase and then change the rules. At least they don't call it a contract and stating "we can change anything but you can't"…so they are a little better and cheaper than some of the unethical corps. we put up with these days.
Their excuse would probably be-Rogers changed the rules due to------people you know who you are.

YAY Finally!
We all knew that this was going to end.
There is no money for SO in being a reseller, having to deal with customers getting their 'data' phones configured on their network. It probably eats into their Customer service budgets.
Now that everyone realizes that there is virtually no cost in hosting a telephone number (freephoneline for example) SO is probably going to reorganize back to it's core business which is 365 expiry cell phone service. The cost for voice service is probably dropping and is more profitable than the unlimited abuse they have to deal with data.
I've never used data. Still a simple guy.
Actually, the truth is whenever I need data, I'm always close to wifi. And for me there is nothing that is really that important that I need a data connection.
Thankfully, I have a cell phone that doesn't need a data connection to be functional.
BRING ON PAY PER USE DATA!
The fairest of the fair would be 1c/100kb of data (whatever 1/10th of a MB is), or even 2c/100kb I would be fine with.
That would work out to $10-20/100mb.
Yes it's more expensive, but at pay per use, if I don't use a lot of data, I shouldn't be have to be punished with a monthly $10 plan.
I hope they have a plan like this. I'm still a low usage guy. I spent $40 last year in airtime. I'm finding it harder to stay with SO. For $80/year I can go with wind mobile and get unlimited incoming calls. It's way more than I use with SO, but with SO I realy limit myself with what I really need.
With Wind, I would set it up with Fongo/Freephoneline and voip.ms for free incoming/voicemail and 1c outgoing.

with UMB gone, the only good thing left for SO is to be a rarely used but available phone. Basically a mobile phone# at 2/month that can be paired with a nokia dumb phone that can last for weeks between charges.
it still has its occasional advantage in very remote area where the GSM coverage should still be better than bell/telus, assuming Rogers has recommission the spectrum for other use(which will eventually happen).

Yes, Speakout is great paired with an emergency dumbphone (I picked up a little Nokia 101 in the UK for about $25 that only needs charging once a month or so).
However, I think there's a genuine opportunity for SO if they can offer 150 or even 200 MB for $10. Heck, even $5 for 50 MB would be useful for some people.
We'll have to wait until the end of June to see what they roll out, but if its $10 for 100 MB they need to fire their marketing team.

Judging what Speakout did with the SMS, getting rid of a decent $10 2500 message SMS, and replacing it with an "unlimited" SMS for $15, which is worse than most of the competition, I would not expect anything decent when it comes to pricing of data.
I would expect a refund from the balance of my account if there is not a decent data plan as a replacement, and drag Rogers and Ztar through the mud to the best of my abilities if I do not get it. Speakout has 2 months to come up with a contingency plan.
