I invite you all to get aquainted with opera Mini
The only way you will stretch 100MB a month. And if you do spend $10 a month then Speakout's 365 day expiration makes it useless… actually worse than Rogers.
Wait and see what they offer instead of dismissing imaginary plans.
Rogers doesn't give you a 20% bonus if you buy $100 airtime. I suspect Speakout will continue this promo on a regular basis.

Opera mini is a legitimate way to surf on your phone.
It can shrink the traffic data considerably. I used it on a test page with images and it shrunk it from 3mb to 89kb, with no noticable difference onscreen. That's a 98% reduction in data. If Big3 was interested in keeping people happy with crummy data plans, they would tell people to use browsers like Opera Mini, but why would they?
I just saw an ad online by telus offering to teach one to use songza on their phone. This is pretty funny since it's the mobile equivalent of Shaw/Rogers teaching people how to use netflix on their home network of which never happens because Shaw/Rogers doesn't make a single cent on normal bandwidth usage.
Songza uses about 100mb/hour. You do the math.

It all depends on how you use your phone.Everybody uses their phones differently. For me, if Speakout goes 100 MB per month for $10 (that BTW is the on going Market rate - so I don't think people's speculations are too far off), I know it is still doable for many people.
I switched from Speakout to Rogers Pay as you go a couple months ago because I wanted full data as UMB had too many ports blocked. I do not miss UMB at all. Currently, I am paying $10/month for 100MB data and $5/month for 250 outgoing SMS. I average only 50MB data per month and about 120 outgoing SMS. I am using it on a iphone 4s with push notifications for Gmail, synced calendars and contacts, use imessage pretty often (push notifications & imessage uses data even if you are on wifi). Also use the occasional google maps, web browsing, youtube and Facebook while on the road only with a 3G data connection. Otherwise, I have wifi at home and at work where most of the time these heavy apps will be using.
On a slight different topic, the sales guys selling phone plans usually say 100 MB per month of data was not possible, especially with an iphone. That will be true if you use the phone's default settings. I believe same goes for any smart phone ( Android, blackberry, etc) However, if you customized the settings properly for your push notifications (e.g push notifications like Exchange's Active sync protocol wastes lots of data), turn off apps that you don't need, understand which apps and services are heavy on data and which are not, you can easily survive comfortable on 100 MB per month. That's how I only average like 50 MB a month with lots to spare!

I agree with this. When I shifted down to 300MB/month on Koodo, I changed a bunch of settings on my phone (changed email to sync only every 30 mins, changed email to only load headers unless I click on the message, changed my RSS reader to not show pictures, started using Pocket to save RSS stories that I want to read in full without opening it in browser, disabled pictures in mobile Pocket app, started using Opera Mini, use Pocket for Twitter links as well). I use my phone all day long and a lot of that is without wifi and I'm finding that I'm only using about 150MB to 200MB now. I was never into YouTube before this, so this doesn't feel like a big sacrifice. I can always view the sync'd Pocket content on my PC as well, so I can view all the images and videos if I want to then.

Maybe you don't have to get rid of push email just for data savings? I have a Gmail account and use the Gmail app for instant push notifications. It uses push-imap or imap-idle, and consumes about 10 % of data for push notifications compared to Exchange Active Sync.
Just curious, what email system and phone are you using?

I'm using a Nokia N8 and I have two email accounts pulled in. A gmail account that has a defauted IMAP setup on the phone and a Google Apps account that is set up under Exchange ActiveSync.
My Google Apps account doesn't get a lot of email so every half hour suits me fine. For my gmail, my options are every [5,10,15,30 mins], every [1,4,12 hrs], After Notification, and Manual Sync Only. Perhaps I don't have push-imap on my phone. I used to have it set to 5 mins, but assumed it's using some data to check the email server every few minutes, so I just changed it to be 30 mins instead.

So what do you guys think?
June 28-29 activate the 30 day feature to maximize the plan?
most people have spare SIMs anyway...
at least we can get an extra 30 days and beat the life out of it because even if we go over the 2GB what are they gonna do? take it away?
yuk yuk
how would that work? you'd cancel on june 28/29 and re-subscribe to UMB again a day later? my renewal date works out for me. My UMB expires on the 26th of June and will auto-renew and so I'll have until July 25th or so to adjust to the new data plans. hopefully they are not too painful on the wallet.

I believe you are right. The push-imap may not be available on the mail client on the Nokia - same with the iphones built-in mail app. I had to install the gmail app from google to have that feature. Not sure if google has the gmail app available for Nokia platform?

My prediction is they will have something very similar to the Chatr data "plan" Which are 100MB plans. Something like that wouldn't work for me. I'm hoping for the best but preparing the worst; I'm ready to make a switch.

Me too.
I've got very little credit left and don't want to make a commitment to SO again. I'd like to 'upgrade' to some data for some occasional web surfing on the go, but not make that $10/month commitment. I just don't need to use my phone that much on the go.
Wind has a 1c/10kb so when using opera mini to check something like movie times, it will only cost me 5c-10c to get all of my information. A very reasonable price I think. And with unlimited incoming, I will get all the calls and data I need for $80/year.

If you only need data sometimes then you might like prepaid data packs.. you can get 10MB for $1 for 24 hours... and if you run out it will send you a text message and block data... This way I know how much I am spending.. pay per use is what can drain your balance if something goes wrong... like you load a youtube video over LTE.. 10 seconds $20 easy...

I watch tons of youtube videos on my phone. 2gb at a time, but I download playlists and my 'watch later' lists using my laptop and it's youtube download program.
I highly recommend it. I can download videos at 10mb/s.
Youtube on desktop is almost unuseable at times.
What plan has prepaid data packs? $1/10mb really isn't that much more. I would use maybe either 100kb or go crazy. So that's 10c or way more than 10mb. At that point I would tether the phone to the laptop and have unlimited 24h for $5 (midnight anyways)
SO really needs to innovate. I don't want to go to Wind.

So yea, basically what happens is that my renew date is on the 5th...
So I will just call in to have the feature cancelled on the 28th like at 11pm, then after 12:30 am, add the feature again..
hehehe...
I will lose 5 days but who cares...
I like how these slime balls still have the unlimited browsing option to lure people in, then they find out in 28 days.. sorry no more!
HA-HAHAHAH!

No info yet on the plans... I guess they figure that they dont have to reveal them before June 30th because they have a 30 day buffer to lure in the unsuspecting customers before they release the overpriced data plans...
PetroCanada Mobility still has not mentioned the end of the UMB plan.. I guess if they continue with it everyone will be jumping ship to them...

As long as you're okay with buying $100 vouchers to get 12 months of service, but how confident will you be to buy a $100 voucher if they end up canning UMB as well? I believe Petro Canada's smallest voucher for 30 days is $15, so if you don't use any voice or text then your UMB cost would essentially be $15/month instead of $11.25 ($10+1.25 9-1-1) with SO.
Still not bad for $15 if it works well for you, but the 365 voucher would be a better use of the money.
