Well I contacted a CSR and complained about the new 4cents a kb with SO , and how unreasonable is that so, the response was...
This is the cost that our provider Roger's has provided SpeakOut which runs on the Roger's network.
You are right that cost is incredibly high so we have been working with Roger's to launch an unlimited data plan in November of this year.
Keep checking back to our web site in November for our launch introduction.

they'll probably do something similar to the Rogers "unlimited browsing" where you can only use it on a SO phone of which none are 3G. i guess that's better then nothing.
it sounds like they are revamping quite a bit. hopefully they keep the long expiry dates and allow us to purchase time online (no 7-elevens close to me)

the only bad part is that none of the SO phones have 3G
anyone here have any experience surfing on EDGE?
I'm currently surfing and posting this on a notebook with an HSDPA Internet stick at reported (by the carrier) speeds that are sub-1Mb/s and often down to EDGE speeds. While it's certainly slower than 5Mb/s on DSL back home, it's more than adequate. And since I'm using a full browser on a notebook I'm probably seeing more bytes than I would using a phone.
Now the real reason for posting this is to give people (and especially any SpeakOut managers in the audience) some idea of what data costs in Europe.
I'm now in Austria. There are Internet stick packages on offer from at least three carriers (T-Mobile, A1 and 3) for prices ranging from €55 to €75 including up to 2GB bandwidth. That includes the stick. No contract.
Compare to SO's $40k/GB and Robbers' $33/GB (on a three year contract!)
The stick and bandwidth are good for up to 12 months. I'll have to do some more reading but as I understand it, if I recharge the stick within 12 months it stays alive; otherwise the SIM expires. That's not a big deal because I can buy a new SIM next time I'm here for little more than the €20/GB cost of bandwidth.
(Mobilkom is the other big player in Austria. I haven't yet explored their offerings but there's no need to given what the other three provide.)
I'm posting this using the 3 ( http://www.drei.at ) network. The stick is a Huawei E1550 which seems standard and supports both NA and EU bands. From what I can determine the stick is locked, however, unlock codes are available on eBay for ~$10. There may even be free unlock software available (I'm still looking) via BitTorrent.
Bonus: According to the brochure that came in the package I can roam throughout Austria (naturally) but also GB, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Hong Kong et al without any surcharges.
Beat that Robbers and Hell Canada! (Or take your sticks and shove 'em ;))

UPDATE:
We have not finalized our costs but it will be less than $10.00 per month and yes you could go to any site. As it relates to using 3rd party I am not sure what you are referring to? Twitter etc?

Heh, Iamdrumming would You get it? This would be a STEAL if this was worth $5 and there was 365 day expiry!

It would have to be around that $5/month mark, before I would consider it. Let's say it is $5/month. That would cost $60 a year, and that's just for the unlimited browsing, not including any calls or 911 fees. So, you would have to get at least a $75 top-up voucher. I think it would be smart for SpeakOut to offer this. We would be burning through our balances quicker, and topping up more often.
Personally, and this is just my guess, is that we will see the unlimited browsing being offered for $7/month. I would still like to see it for $5/month though. It shouldn't be anymore expensive than President's Choice Mobile unlimited browsing offer ($5/month)

"Anyone care to speculate if they will allow tethering. I'd much rather view a page on my N810 vs my E71"

Unlimited browing and tethering for less than $10 a month? Don't you think you are asking too much? At that price, I would dump the Bell DSL service in a heart beat.

You're talking about dramatically different geography. Europe has a relatively dense population of over 700,000,000 people. Canada has around 4.5% of that population spread out across a continent (although most of us are within a few miles of the American border). That has an impact on competition and economies of scale.
