2) i bought the $25 airtime. but since i still have 5 bucks left, can i not activate my $25 yet? is there an expiry date as to when the 25 must be activated?

1) Voicemail access through a land line is free.

2) You have 90 days to activate the $25.

How do I activate my voice mail? Do I have to call CS? I thought it is activated by default. Thx.

Welcome to SpeakOut! 🙂

Voicemail is not activated automatically. Just your number is the first time you use your phone.

Hold down the 1 button on your SpeakOut phone. It will then call the voicemail number already programmed into your phone.
From there, you will be able to set up the voicemail options such as recording your name, greeting etc. Also, you will set your password. The default password is the last 4 digits of your phone number, but you can change that easily.

That costs airtime. You can also accomplish the same for free by:
1. call SO CS and ask them to activate VM
2. turn off your SO phone
3. call your SO number from a landline
4. press # at the VM prompt
5. set up your VM information.

You could even skip "Step 1" above. It isn't necessary.

True, it is cheaper just calling your SpeakOut phone (that's turned off) from a landline. I just called from my SpeakOut phone. It costs hardly anything. My balance is still over $100, and that's when I went for the last promotion back in August.

To listen to a short message, true. But to set up and configure VM, add a personal greetimg, etc. can take 10 minutes or more. Why waste $2 or $3 when you can do it all for free?

It took me not even 2 minutes to do mine. I just picked the standard greeting, recorded my first name, and I was done.

Hi iamdrumming, I got a bit of problem to setup the voice mail on both my Speakout phones.

When I hold the 1 button the first time, it poped up a text box asking me to enter the voice number, I have thought it is the passcode, so I entered it. then the phone was trying to call the number I just entered, and said the number cannot be connected and handed off. If I try to hold 1 button again, it automatically calls the number I entered before, and failed. So I am screwed. However I can accesss the voice mail from landline without problem, but still consider it would be handy to just able to access voice mail through SO phone itself.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Tony,

Don't worry, we'll get through this. 🙂

Your voicemail number is a different number altogether. It isn't a passcode, but a normal phone number.
I'm not sure where you are located, but my phone is 905 area code, and this is the number that is in my phone:

+14162705628

Enter that whole number in, including the '+'

Also, try this number if you are in the GTA:

+16476699989

Hope that helps!

Also, I have another solution to this.

You can get the voicemail number by entering *#61# (then press send) on your SpeakOut phone.

It will say "Requesting" then "Call Forwarding" and "Activate for: Voice calls". On the bottom of the screen will say "Details". Click on the left button. On the next screen it will then say "Number" and "Delay".

Click again on "Number" and it will show you your voicemail number.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Look for a menu option something like...

Menu -> Messaging -> Voice Messages -> Voice mailbox number [Nokia]

or

Menu -> Messages -> Voicemail -> Options -> Setup -> Voicemail Setup -> Voicemail Number [Motorola]

For my Nokia 1208, this is what I have to click to get to my voicemail number. Not sure if it's for all Nokia's though:

Menu-> Contacts-> Settings-> Voice mailbox number-> Select

It's not. Best to Google for the owner's manual of the specific phone.

BTW it should also be possible to use your own phone number, i.e. call yourself, in order to get to your voicemail.

iamdrumming & bylo, thanks a lot for all your help.

I tried all methods you mentioned above, but unfortuantelly none of them worked, they all based on that I have already have a correct mailbox number setup on my phone. Take the method, Menu -> Messages -> Voicemail , for example, it shows the wrong number I entered before.

Finally, I solved the problem by asking the mailbox number from a workmate who also has a SO phone. It is an easy way, isn't it? (:>

Again, thank you for your help.

I'm glad it worked for you. Did you try my other option? Pressing *#61# then send will bring you to your voice mail number, and it won't necessarily show you the number already on your phone. It will show the true voice mail number for your area.

Glad you are up and running though!
