Other than superior (?) customer service and superior (?) signal are the other cheapos (e.g. Koodo) better in any significant way? 7-11 seems perfect for my needs...

1. I have a piece of junk 8 year old phone kept together with a rubber band but the flip phone (Alcatel A392A) for $60 plus tax actually looks darn good. Better than the old one I have, and I have been looking for this old man's simple phone everywhere and couldn't find it - voila! I believe it is sold in magazine ads as the 'firefly' or some such.

2. Primary use of phone is incoming calls (free on 7-11 plan). I don't want data. I don't need data. I don't even like texting.

3. Need to be able to use in GVRD (Vancouver area) and maybe switch back and forth to Okanagan. Chatr's cheapest plan 'Local talk' will not permit this without extra charges.

4. Voice mail needed - free on 7-11, versus 25 cent per retrieved message on Chatr (if done on same phone)

5. Want to be able to pay by using paid with cash (friends will gift to me) top up cards. Any problem here?

6. I don't want a smart phone. I want a stupid phone.

Everything looks good. Have I misunderstood anything about suitability for my needs?

There are a couple of misunderstandings.

2. Incoming calls are not free. They cost you $0.30/min. - the same as outgoing calls.
3. Speakout uses the Rogers network. So if Rogers works well in these areas, then so will Speakout.
4. Voicemail is free, but it costs the the price of a phone call ($0.30) to listen to it.
5. I don't know if they have top-up cards. One can simply go to a 7-Eleven store and purchase credit at the cash - minimum $25, which lasts for a year. They will give you a cash register receipt which has the code you will enter into your on-line account from your computer.

Let me be more clear (my mistake)...

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like Chatr might be better. But I prefer the old fashioned flip phone available from 7-11.

Sounds like Speak Out online top-up system will not work for me.

My goal (in addition to functionality and low cost) is anonymity or at least some semblance of privacy. I won't bore you with the details, but my buddy's wife can't know he is paying for my phone, so it musn't be billed to his credit card as she sees those bills. And for reasons I won't go into here although he can set up the registration (if absolutely necessary) he won't be doing the paying every month.

It has to be something very unofficial and flexible such as paying cash, no ID, can switch phones etc. It won't be a big deal if he has to show ID as long as I can top it up by purchasing top-up cards for cash with no ID. I used to do something like this in Vietnam and Indonesia ten to fifteen years ago while travelling. No hassle, no paper trail. No way am going to get involved with criminals who sell stolen phones and accounts. It just has to all be straightforward and more or less honest. Just old school. No bank cards, just enter codes after paying cashier the cash. 'Geez, I forgot my ID'...

If you call your own number from a land line, you can check voicemail for free (see forum faqs for these and other good to knows) :)

I also like speakout because I like to pay cash as king at the store.

However, as with all other cell providers, that's where the privacy ends.
Assume all calls are recorded and stored forever and a copy sent to the NSA.
Assume phone numbers for calls in and out are stored forever and at NSA.
(one of the questions they ask you at customer service is what were your last few called or received phoned numbers; they have it in plain view).
Assume each location where you call from and when your cell phone is turned on and connected to a nearby cell tower is logged and with NSA.
Cell towers are spaced so that a cell phone can reach at least 2 at anytime.
Triangulates your position for the NSA.
Big brother knows all. Then there's Google....
Best private communications is in person in a forest or crowded rowdy pub.
