I'm going to have a short trip in US, and my only cell phone from 7-Eleven doesn't work in US.
I'm thinking to buy a cheap prepaid phone with $10 of airtime when I arrive, use it lightly while I'm there (mainly to be reachable by family back home), and hopefully have it unlocked when after I come back.

I read that T-Mobile will unlock a headset after 90 days of service.

I found walmart.com has a prepaid Samsum with T-Mobile service for $15.

Are those prepaid phones from Walmart (and the like) activated, or can they be activated at the store? I would like to be reachable soon after I leave airport.

Do you have experience regarding unlocking such phones from US?

Most phones are activated by calling the toll-free number included in the package. I'm not sure if they are activated right at the store. I know some are, but it's all up to the company.

I have an unlocked T-Mobile phone I use while in the States, and it unlocked with no problems. It was actually easier than my Nokia.

One word of advice though. Research what wireless carrier you decide on before you go to the USA. Coverage can vary greatly between carriers. Generally Verizon is the king of coverage in the USA.

I have unlocked a few T-Mobile phones. Best way in Canada is through their "chat" support. Reason for unlock is a "short trip to Canada."
Instructions followed last time in less than 24 hours. on a Nokia 5230 ($129)
It's now 60 days I believe.
