We will be taking a road trip to PEI, NB, NS. We are driving from MB with a SO phone. In the USA we use a plan that is 10 cents/minute anywhere in the country. This really suits our style of not booking ahead and just calling from the road to make hotel bookings etc. Is there anything like this in Canada? Mostly for the 3 provinces mentioned. I would be willing to buy a phone for say $30 if i can use it for a month in the maritimes.

Call SO and tell them you're moving to the Maritimes so you can have a local phone number while there. If you want a new handset, the best deal for your short-term visit is probably Petro-Canada Mobility. It's run by the same company that runs SpeakOut Wireless, but available from Petro-Canada gas stations across Canada (including PEI, NB and NS). They will sell you a Nokia 1661 phone for $29 if you buy $25 airtime. It's 25 cents per minute.

One thing to consider is that GSM coverage is pretty sub standard for the bulk of the Maritimes unless you are in a population centre, and even then it is iffy.
I think a better choice would be a CDMA phone from President's Choice mobile. They have phones as low as $39, lower if you get one on kijiji 20 cent a minute is nice also.
