I have a Bell phone, contract ran out a while back, and I'm on month to month. I intend to get rid of Bell and move my number to 7-11. I've already bought and activated my 7-11 phone but have not yet contacted either company to request anything.

From what I have read, whether I give them 30 days notice or not, Bell will charge me for a month of unreceived service after my number is moved. This is written into the Terms of Service, and has been frequently reported online. Naturally I intend to pay for the service they have given me. Anything beyond that is extortion. Realistically though, if I don't pay their rip-off fee, they'll just send it to a collection agency and it will hurt my credit rating.

Do I have any options at all, besides get ripped off?

No, you're misreading their terms. If you call and give them 30 day's notice, they will terminate your service at the end of that 30 day period without requiring you to pay more.

As for your comments about extortion, you signed their contract voluntarily. You chose to agree to their nasty terms because you were lusting after a new shiny toy. It's a mistake they want us all to make.

Actually I have no problem with them wanting 30 days notice for cancelling service. What I have a problem with is that I have read several accounts of people who gave 30 days notice, then arranged a number transfer 28 or so days later, and were billed for an extra 30 days after that, being told by customer service that the transfer overrode their previous notice. The time period after a number transfer is currently a separate point in the Terms of Service... but I got my contract well before wireless number portability was available at all, and this separate time period wasn't part of the contract I signed.

It's true, you get billed an entire 30 day period. The problem I have with that is the contract I signed over a decade ago had no such period specified. I still have the contract from Baka.

I was also month to month and they billed and deducted a $450 early cancellation fee from my M/C in error - without my knowledge until I got my bill then my cc statement. Then they said they had a "policy" of 78 (I asked the person 7 or 8, they said no it's seventy-eight) days to correct their error and give me my money back. It took me over 2 months and 5 support followup calls to get my money back sooner.

Just say NO to Bell. This is how they treated a 10+ year customer. I paid them $50 a month for far too long. Lots of bumps along the way too.

So just contact SpeakOut and request a port out immediately. You'll be billed for 30 day's service starting from that date.

And I agree with everyone here -- postpaid contracts are evil and should be avoided. That's why my family have been speakout customers for years; we've quite literally saved thousands of dollars.

I gave them a month's notice that I was going to be doing this, and the CSR assured me that it would be enough, that I should keep my Bell account open for a couple days extra just in case, and that my billing would be prorated. When I ported out my number, everything worked out after all. So maybe the cases I read about were the result of a bad CSR or something. It probably helped to tell them explicitly that I was porting away rather than just closing my account.
