I got sick of paying $10 per month for crippled browsing on SpeakOut and started to investigate other options.
The best I found was Telus prepaid. They have a $20/month data plan that gives me 250 MB data and unlimited messaging. I also bought an LG Optimus One (Android 2.2) phone from Telus for $199 without contract. Voice is 20 cents/min if you have the data plan. Their $100 top-ups are good for a year, so I don't have to worry about short expiry dates.
Personally, it's worth an extra $10 per month to have a smartphone that actually works. Oh, and an online account system that lets me track detailed usage and purchase airtime.
We haven't completely abandoned SO, though. My wife still uses it for basic phone service because it's the best deal going if you just want to make occasional calls.

Telus prepaid got my attention also. The $7 unlimited 1 number looks impressive. You could set up a VOIP PBX and call and get calls routed from that, so you could have unlimited calling to anywhere through that one number.
250 GB is way too chintzy, even for $20. When I was using a Virgin mobile data plan, it took me a lot of effort to keep under the 512 meg limit, and all I was doing was basic browsing. I ultimately decided to keep Speakout, and ditch Virgin.
I certainly see your point though. If you have no problem staying under the limit, power to you. How punitive are the overage charges, or are they actually honest and just stop providing you with data when you go over?

I got to see this little nugget here: http://www.telusmobility.com/e.....ging.shtml
Limited time offer: Enjoy unlimited data for 30 days every time you purchase or renew the Data + Messaging 20 add-on. Offer ends March 20, 2011
Not as good as it sounds though. I checked with Telus, and it actually means you only get unlimited data up to March 20, 2011
I also checked on the data overage charges, and it is $3 a megabyte. Not 5 cents a kilobyte, but still robbery.
