Is this possible? Could I subscribe to a tablet data plan and use it on a smartphone? I believe it would be more bang for my buck.

Anyone ever tried it? Some carriers will sell you the SIM card for data plans, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I currently have a Telus tablet plan, and I use it on a phone. You kind of have to be tricky and tell the Telus people you are going to use the SIM card on multiple data devices, because you do not want to give Telus your IMEI if you do not have a tablet. The reps are not stupid, but there is certain protocols they have to follow. Never say you are going to use it on a phone. Just say you already have a decent voice plan and you do not need another one.

I have a flex tablet plan. Surprisingly, there is an option to use voice, but it costs $1 a minute.

Make sure you pick the right APN. sp.telus.com will cost you money. Use isp.telus.com instead

What about text messages? Are they counted as data, or $1 per message?
Last but not least, is there 911 service for voice calls?

I would have no idea what a text message cost on a tablet plan would cost. Probably nothing for incoming, and a fortune for outgoing. I never saw the point of ever using text on a tablet plan, so I could be wrong. In any case, text messages, if offered by your tablet plan, would not affect your data quota.

You can get applications that do unlimited texting from low to no cost, like text plus, text me, or even Fongo. These applications would affect your data plan, unless you were using wifi, but the hit would be so small, it would be barely noticeable on your quota.

As for 911, it is likely supported, never did check that out. Download Fongo, and you get 911 service also.

Thanks bridonca. I don't like to text either, but that doesn't stop people from texting me, so it's important to find out how much I will be charged for incoming texts. This is kind of like spam faxes...
