Hi everybody,

I have iPhone 3G (Rogers issue) and I am with Petro Canada for quite some time now. I am happy with everything so today for the first time I upgraded to 20+8 dollars plan with data. That part was easy.
Nothing worked on my phone and using advices from this forum I used iPhone configuration utility I achieved 3G signal, browser and maps to work fine.
However my e-mail (.mac and one more regular POP account) doesn't work, can't log in into Skype and can't log in into WhatsApp.
Please advice! Thank you,

Zack

only email that works AFAIK are Exchange/ActiveSync(i.e. hotmail/gmail or corporate exchange server) or yahoo.

whatsapp or iMessage etc. would not work. ebuddy/nimbuzz would(aggregator so you may have security concern).

skype is supposed to for as it can penetrate most proxy via HTTPS but there are mix messages for SO/Petro Canada UMB, personally i don't use it so no idea.

chimpanzee, thank you for post. You are saving me valuable time and nerves. So I can pretty much take out Skype and WhatsApp.

Shouldn't xxx@mac.com work as well? It is WEB (IMAP) base account. I have to check it again. Maybe create Gmail and get things forwarded around.

I never browse using phone, but yes, would like to have e-mail and WhatsApp working. Skype would be bonus as well. Only one friend of mine has a Viber. I have to test that one as well.

Here is more, after checking with .mac, POP3 and Gmail accounts none of those works for me. As soon as I switch to WiFi messages start loading and everything works.

So as conclusion, only browser and maps work on my iPhone. Nothing else. If nobody here has advice how to fix that I will have to cancel plan and go back to pay-as-you go thing.

gmail/hotmail in activesync mode works, so is yahoo. forget about pop, imap. they are last century thing comparing with activesync.

google even pay microsoft for activesync, telling you something.

m.google.com is the server, your email address is the login id.

m.hotmail.com is for hotmail

and yes, mail for exchange also works.

Exchange/ActiveSync is a https only protocol which works nicely with UMB. It also supports push but may not be as efficient as normal data.

Yeah, my Mail for exchange is m.hotmail.com and m.google.com.

UMB will work for MFE? That's great!

It's a great feature for me to stick with SO.

I was looking at wind's free incoming and was getting tempted. However, their data was pretty expensive.

How would you have yahoo settings so you can check the emails from yahoo account? Do you use Safary?

just activate umb again and i can say that skype(on android) works. though the usual thing is needed for most android apps(root and auto proxy).

for yahoo mail, again needs its own app and proxying. by itself no email works(not sure about native gmail) as neither yahoo or the builtin client(even for exchange mode) honour proxy setting in apn.

I haven't found a way to use Yahoo mail via Exchange/ActiveSync option on iPhone's Mail. This means if I don't have WiFi (i.e. only UMB), then Yahoo mail doesn't work through iPhone's Mail app and I have to visit the Yahoo mail website via Safari. It's not as convenient, but fortunately my Yahoo mail address is no longer as important as it used to be.

For help with using Exchange/ActiveSync for Gmail via iPhone's Mail, then see here:
