I have a sim card from a Nokia phone in my iphone 3gs, originally a Rogers locked phone.
Calling, texting, etc all works.
I added data recently.
Browsing, facebook, weather, etc. all works
Mail does not work.
My research on the internet tells me that the proxy server makes the mail request after the proxy switch to the port that I connected to the proxy with - port80. Of course my ISPs use the standard mail ports, none of which are 80.

Has anybody been able to make mail work on 3G from a Rogers locked iphone?
It works from WiFi, but not on 3g.

Thanks for any tips or leads.
I will also consider jailbreaking and finding a better mail application, but I'd prefer not to. It just adds so many more variables when trying to troubleshoot issues like these.

anything that is not using http/https won't work via goam.com as proxy.

there is a chance that yahoo and hotmail would work. gmail is possible depending on whether iPhone is accessing it via imap(won't work) or activesync(i.e. hotmail style which should work).

I use iMailG on my iPhone 3G. download it from the app store for free. App store only works via wifi for download (i have found). I have my gmail account set up to "fetch" my work, personal, and gmail account all at once.
