I haven't had much luck getting gmail to push reliably, but outlook.com works for me. Outlook uses https ports for it's sync and this seems to work fine on petro canada. This assumes your email client supports exchange. I'm using an old 2.2 ish android phone with the stock email client configured for my outlook.com email. Here's the settings I used:

I've forwarded my gmail to my oulook.com account and push email now is working reliably for me.

The only problem I've noticed is that outlook.com seems to put everything into it's junk folder initially, so I had to whitelist all the email addresses I expect to get email from.
