Is Area Code really relevant?

Many ads for SIM cards specify the area code of the phone number as if that's an important issue. But is it really?

The SpeakOut contract fineprint says that an up to $10 charge may be charged to change a phone number. Yet many posters have reported here and on other forums that they've had their phone numbers changed to a new area code without charge and without any other hassle.

So, is it really relevant what area code a SIM card has when you buy it?

Has anyone actually been charged to change their area code?

Has anyone encountered any other hassles with SpeakOut that would make them want to buy a SIM card whose phone number is already in their area code?

I just did and they charged me $10. But this SIM card I bought from someone had $10 on the card. So I did not actually get charged. There is no hassle at all to change the number. They did not ask me where I got the SIM card from.

I think it depends on WHY u change the AC. I bought a phone in Nanaimo, BC that had an AC from the mainland. So local calls to my phone from Nanaimo would be LD. CS agreed that was a 7-11 goof and changed the number no charge.
