Does anyone have experience with a free method to unlock a Nokia 1208 ?

When did you buy your Nokia 1208? It might already be unlocked. When I bought mine last year, it came unlocked.

There are also threads on this forum that advertise free or low cost unlocking services. Use the forum Search function to find them.

I have not yet bought it. I am planning to visit USA this winter, and would like to have a phone for emergencies.

As far as I know, The Speak out and Petro Canada Nokia 1208 phones are still unlocked. Speak out apparently is locking it's newer phones however, but as far as the 1208 is concerned, I think you are still in the clear.

Agrees, the new phones and faster turning inventory appears to be locked to rogers. The 1208's that are still unlocked might be old stock and have been sitting on the shelf for a while... grab em while u still can is my guess

You can also buy unlocked GSM phones relatively inexpensively at places like FactoryDirect.
