Hi Folks,

I'm planning on visiting southern Ontario for two weeks in August. I'd hoped to get a cheap pre-paid phone, something like Tracfone which costs $20 and includes 20 minutes of airtime, but I haven't found anything in Canada that cheap.

I'm going to enter at the peace bridge, spend about a week around Markham, then head up to Peterborough for a couple days, then down to Sarnia before heading on to Chicago. I had hoped I could find a phone to use both in Canada and US so I could keep in touch with all my family and let them know where we are and when to expect us.

I don't understand this stuff about locked phones and GSM etc, if you know of a pre-paid phone that I could use in the US I'd appreciate it, or a phone that i could swap out the SIM cards so I could use it in the US too, or if you have a phone that I could borrow for a couple weeks, etc., please let me know!

You can borrow a used/new phone with 7-11 sim card from me. I will charge you $20-$25 plus the cost of whatever the 7-eleven service charge you used. You can either pick up/drop off in Mississauga or pay the shipping cost.

For very light usage get a t-mobile phone. It'll roam in Canada on Rogers and you're good to go.

Thanks, the t-mobile is good in both US and Canada, I'll go with that!

Be sure to talk to t-mobile and tell them your plans. You need the phone unlocked, but the good news is that t-mobile are pretty good when it comes to unlocking. You can get a rogers or fido sim on ebay for about $10. But one from a vendor with a good rating, and one that sells a lot of new sims.

Thanks for the info! That is exactly what I wanted, something that I can use here and in Canada, and $10 or so would be the perfect amount for airtime, since I'd only be making a couple calls. I really appreciate your suggestions!

It does not need to be unlocked. I said it could roam on Rogers. If you want to use it with a SO sim yes it needs unlocking, but to roam NO!. T-mobile will work in US and Canada with no mod required!!!!
