How do I turn up the volume while on a call? I don't see the option on the phone, and the manuals don't say anything about it. Can this be done? Is the phone this basic?

If it's anything like the Nokia 1208 (and other Nokia's), you press the right directional to turn the volume up, and the left directional arrow to turn the volume down (while on a call).

I tried that. The display shows the number dialed and if you press left or right it scrolls through the number. Pressing options doesn't help either as there is no 'volume' option.

Never mind, if you clear all the numbers from the display, you can now use the navigation key to turn the volume up and down. Kind of annoying having to clear the number to do this, you'd think that Nokia would come up with a better way.
