Hi,

I was planning to buy he new HTC Desire HD and popping in my SIM card from my SO Nokia Phone. My question is: Will it run smoothly on an Android phone? Will I be able to do everything as normal on the phone? Will the web browser work fine and the other data-based apps? I haven't found much info on SO and Android phones so any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Your Android needs the latest 2.2 Froyo update, because the older firmware would not record the Speakout APN settings.

For the most part, you should be able to do what you need, albeit at EDGE speeds.

Hi,

That's interesting. So does anyone know for sure that th apps won't work? And also, GPS should work shouldn't it?

I'm just trying to make sure before I shell out $600 for the phone.

Thanks in advance.

I am running Android 2.1 on my LG Optimus. I find that the apps I have installed from the Market have worked so far, as long as I am connected to WiFi.
If I am depending on SO, then the apps do not seem to work. I have been able to get around some of this by using the web browser and going to the mobile site.
If I use the app for Gmail and I am dependent on SO (no WiFi access), then no go. But I if I go to Gmail at http://www.gmail.com, then all is good. The GPS works most of the time.

OMG, I was gonna post if anyone knows about LG GT540 and here I see you!
I went to a phone store and the clerk said I can only run this phone on Rogers&Fido, so I didn't buy it.
But I guess SO network is compatible with GT540?
My question is, I just checked Youtube about this phone and many people complain about the phone draining the phone's credit even though it's on WiFi.
How do you use this phone for internet?
and if I may add one more question, does this phone have different language option?
Thank you!

I believe the phone store clerk was right that Speakout runs on the Rogers/Fido network, but I use the Speakout data plan on the GT540 when not on WiFi.
I have not looked at any Youtube videos, but because the Speakout Data Plan is unlimited flat rate per month I cannot see how it would drain credit. It is $10.00 per month whether you use it or not.
When I use my browser, it will use Speakout if I do not have WiFi access. I can disable this feature, but because SO plan is flat rate and unlimited, I always enable this feature.
Yes, there are other language options.

I have a factory unlocked Dell Streak that came with android 2.2. You can only get the unlocked version from Dell USA. I installed the SO SIM card and went to Settings / Wireless & network Settings / Mobile Networks / Access Point Names / APNs
Name Speak Out
APN goam.com
Proxy 10.128.1.69
Port 80
Username wapuser1
Password wap
Server
MMSC http:/mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS proxy 10.128.1.69
MMS port 80
MCC 302
MNC 720
Authentication type None
APN type default

The built in browser works but very few Apps work

If you have rooted your android phone then Autoproxy fixes most most apps in android issues, just use the proxy specified above
http://forum.xda-developers.co.....st13877540

Android v 3.1 is supposed to adhere to the proxy settings in the apn, but for now this appears to be a good work around.

Only for rooted phones

yes, the beloved iptables. That is the advantage of android, it is just linux. I don't understand why one needs to root the phone though. It is a personal device that should just run as root like all those routers etc. strange product design.

for Android, all most all the app works good except voip apps. However, skype works very good because it use the different protocol. So far, you can send and receive unlimited free SMS, use skype get very cheap call and use a lot of apps to get news and infomation.

OMT

goam.com blocks port 5228 which is used by androids C2DM to push notifications to the phone. With this port blocked some functionality is limited on the android phone
for example gmail new message notifications do not work, (but manual refreshes do).
