I will be traveling to Montreal for a few days and need information about purchasing a SIM card. Can it be used both for both calls in Canada and to call back and forth from Canada to the US? Does it work for text messages? I have a Samsung Gravity T I purchased used, does this mean it is unlocked? If not will T-mobile unlock it so I can use the SIM card? How does activation of the SIM card work?
Also, The person that is traveling with me has a prepaid tracfone, anyone know if the purchased SIM card will work with that?
Thanks for your help, this is all very new to me.

I have no way to tell if your T-mobile Samsung Gravity T phone is locked or not. If you have a buddy with an AT&T SIM card, and it works on that phone, the phone is likely unlocked. If it is locked, T-mobile is pretty good when it comes to unlocking phones for free, though there might be potential problems because it is a 3rd party phone. In any case, you got to talk to T-mobile to discuss options.
As for Canadian phone and SIM options, for $59 plus tax, you can get a Nokia 1661 phone, SIM card, unlimited data, and unlimited local calling From Petro Canada mobility. http://mobility.petro-canada.c.....s/133.aspx You can use the SIM card on your unlocked Samsung Gravity T and set up the APN setting to get the data working.
On the cheap end, you can get a FIDO SIM card on eBay for less than $5, and pay $40 for cityFIDO which gives you unlimited local calls http://www.fido.ca/web/Fido.po.....epaidRates
If you make a lot of calls to the US, I think you would be better off buying a calling card, because cell phone long distance is expensive. I recommend President's choice calling cards, because the quality is really good. 3.5 cents a minutes is a little high, but there are not other stupid sneaky fees, and you can call a 1800 number. I am sure you also have a good selection of calling cards in the US, and if you get one, make sure there is a Montreal access number, and you can call Canadian numbers of course.
As for the Tracphone, don't bother taking it to Canada. It is really hard to unlock, and when unlocked, won't work with the Tracphone service anymore.
There are other options of course, but I do not know your usage will be.
