On June 27th, I purchased a Speakout sim card for $10.0 and a for $25.0 of credit. I intended to use it in case of emergency and as an alternate internet access. I activated the phone immediately. I worked well. According to the settings obtained on this forum I entered the parameters for my APN (Samsung Google Nexux ICS 4.04) as follow :
Name: Speakout
APN: goam.com
Proxy: 10.128.1.69
Port: 80
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
Authentication Type:not set
APN type: not set
APN protocol: IPv4
A PN enabled
Bearer: unspecified
and then actived the Unlimited Browsing plan for $10 per month.
It worked, inclusive with gmail, opera, google maps. However, they are unexpected shortcomings with the quality of picture or maps being downloaded, the battery usage and the download speed.
I checked two days later, the account was correctly charged with the $10 UMB and the emergency call fee+taxes.
Today my account was down to $0.30. In the meantime, I only used the UMB without any phone call nor any text messages. Most of the time the phone was in flight mode, and always was with me.
Contrary to other wireless operators, Speakout’s web page does not give any detail about the charged amounts.
I called the support line, and learned that more than 100 unwanted text message were charged. According to this kind gentleman, they were all sent to two landline numbers one at my home and one abroad registered with another sim card I used on that phone. Both phones number are in my contacts. Both number were also communicated to Speakout when I set up the sim. Finally, he advised me to remove these numbers from my contacts. Speakout doe not allow to supress the texting function.
The cost of these messages, $0.10 in Canada and $0.30 abroad explained the charges.
I then scrutinized all apps on the phone to see these messages were generated by a faulty setting. I did not find any reason for these messages.
Afterwards, I called again the support line and after a long waiting time, a lady explained me that Speakout’s computer is never at fault, that if messages were charged they were made by me. If my phone is sending message without my knowledge I should return it to the manufacturer. For privacy reasons she cannot address the issue and does not want to communicate the content of the messages ot their reason. She does not want to transfer the issue to their technical department for help.
The fact she does not want to communicate the content of the message is surprising as it will not allow me to find and eliminate the reason of these overcharge. I will not load again my account with $25.00, end up using Speakout, and write-off the money spent.
Do you have any hint about what happened?
How can I deactivate the `texting` function and still use browsing?
Does some data traffic be diverted to text?

Umb has nothing to do with SMS. Whether u enable Umb the SMS function still works and if u have faulty app, it will continue to drain ur money.
They support seemed to be helpful based on what u described. U cannot expect them to solve ur problem. At least, they tell u what it is about and what number that is what they can do.

You might be sending out messages by accident because of the sensitive touchscreen, commonly referred to as Pocket Calling. You might be doing that with your texting instead of calling.
If you have the Contacts icon on the home screen, remove it. It's convenient but deadly and really no need as your Phone app also has Contacts. I've also downloaded Tiny Call Confirm app that requests confirmation before a call goes out.
It's doubtful a rogue app is texting unless it is another texting app.

Thank you!
I did not install any app or widget for messaging. The only app on the phone is ICS native app. The contact icon is not on the home screen. However, I will try Tiny Call Confirm.

Sorry Tiny Call Confirm does not prevent sending unwanted SMS, neither in its lite nor paid version.

The more I search, the more I getting convinced that the messages charged by Speakout were not under control of the Android ICS on my phone.
In the meantime I try to use the APN setting by changing the lines
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
to blank:

MMS Port:
I hope that this will avoid the sending of unwanted SMS. Does anybody have any experience with it ?
Many thanks.

the only time I heard about similar things are on iphone which was related to its facetime/imessage registration feature. and it wasn't on speakout but president's choice mobile.
So I am with their support line that it is about the phone, not their service. BTW, even though they don't have online log of the detail, what they have provided to you is more or less the same as destination number, date/time and duration of call are what you can get from any telco concerning call records, online or not.

As far as I can tell, SpeakOut and PetroCanada do not charge for these messages. By default, the iPhone will be sending to a short code that is not supported. Even using the workaround described here. and using a UK number for the registration does not result in any charges (I've registered several times because I switched sims).
