Thanks for the recommendations.
Am I okay to just look for any unlocked GSM phone or are some recommended more than others (or is there something else I should be looking for?) As you can tell, I'm a newbe at this. . . .

Need to do research. LTE, 3g, umts, whatever. The bands the phone operates on.
You are in Vancouver? Do you use tmobile in the usa at times? I just got a Tmobile Prism for $99. With a valid active prepaid account they sent me the requested unlock code. Great little basic Android phone which will work with speakout, tmobile, at&t, telus for me depending on speakout or ekit sim use.
