This is my first post.
I have resisted asking this question for over a month because it sounds like a dumb question and I figured it must have been addressed already.

The quality of this site is such that as a non technical user, I have been able to find everything I need to take an Iphone and get it setup on speakout.

I got things working in Dec. and enjoyed unlimited service for a couple of months.
Now, thanks to this forum, I have almost everything I need working on my Iphone. The one exception is sending email. I use Gmail as my provider. I have set up the account as an exchange account on my iphone and I get push notifications, I recieve email, the only thing I can't do is send or reply. I have a desktop PC and laptop so I have been using Imap and it has worked well to keep everything together. When I read the other posts I see a lot of discussion on how to recieve email or get notifications. It is just not clear to me if sending emails on an iphone using gmail is possible. I guess I am saying it is not clear if everyone has this figured out and it is just me having a problem or is everyone having this problem due to a limitation of the service.

If it is just me any advice on how to either fix or work around the problem would be greatly appreciated.
When ever I try to send, I get an error message that say essintially it can't connect to the outgoing google smtp server. I have try to change the port setting on the outgoing server, but it is greyed out and I can't modify it.

Any suguestions?

Wolfgang

You are no longer able to send GMail through SMTP with Speakout browsing. I am a bit surprised you can actually receive emails through SMTP, to be frank. You only option is to use the web based GMail client. If you are doing that, and still have problems, your HTTPS might not be configured properly. The default port for HTTPS, but I use port 80 with Speakout. I do not know if port 443 is supported by Speakout at this time.

Thanks for the reply

I get the same results using a browser and Gmail - that is I can receive but not sent.
So, I guess I am not alone with this problem. My Server Port is 587 but I can't change it becuse it is greyed out (or I don't know how to change it). My Incoming server port is 993 (I can edit this, but it works so I am leaving well enough alone)
Has anyone using gmail developed a work around, such as forwarding to another email account and using that to send a reply?

Usually I wait until I am in a Wifi zone and send a reply, but there are times when it would be handy to be able to sent a replay over 3G, even if it means doing something like copying the senders email adress to the non Gmail account and replying.

For my second dumb question, are there emails accounts similar to gmail (e.g. Yahoo, hotmail etc. ) that work with speakout? There are days when I wonder if I am the only person with an iphone that can't sent email.

As always, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have two GMail accounts set up as Exchange accounts and I am able to receive and send e-mail on 3G using UMB. Looking at my settings, I have:

Server: m.google.com
Use SSL: ON

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply

I am making dsome progress but expeiriencing some wierdness as well. I checked the settings you mentioned and I had mine configured the same. You mentioned having more than one gmail account setup and I remembered that I had a secondary gmail account that I used for backup when I was with sympatico. I tried this other gmail account with the browser and it worked.
I then set it up as an exchange account on the iphone and it worked for both sending and receiving with push notifications, so I deleted my primary account and recreated it being careful to clone the setting that work and still no luck. The primary account can receive but not send emails. (same as before)

So now I have a backup means to send email with the iphone. My primary account is hosted by google using my domain, the account that works is just myname @ gmail.com. I guess a long term solution would be to find a hosting provider that is compatible with the iphone and speakout and move my domain.

At the moment I work in an area of town were Wifi is not available (not at work, not even a McDonald's or Starbucks in walking distance)
Being able to respond to email during the morning or afternoon commute (on the bus) would be a real timesaver. Perhaphs i the short term there is a way to combine the mail accounts or similar work around. Anyone else running into this?

Glad you made some progress. My 2 accounts are both google hosted domains, one a business account, the other was the free personal domain one. They both work. I added my regular @gmail.com account as an Exchange account and that works too.

Check your domain settings in Google. Look at 'Settings -> Mobile -> Google Sync for users', and this should be checked off.
