Hi,
I'm a total newbie to all things iPhone, Internet, programming etc. I recently got an unlocked iPhone 4 directly from Apple and have the SpeakOut Unlimited Browsing for $10 on my phone. The SIM card was adjusted and works (it says SpeakOut 3G in the corner). I can use the Internet on Safari perfectly fine as I've used the Apple Configuration Utility to set everything up.
I decided to get the Fongo (Free calling via Internet) app. First I was able to download the Fongo App successfully yet couldn't place calls because it couldn't connect and continually searched for a connection. Tapping it to retry didn't work either. So I deleted it, went back to the App store but now it won't install altogether...the progress bar lights up halfway before it fails.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

The Speakout unlimited mobile browsing option is not the same as data, it is unlimited mobile browsing. It does not support VOIP. You should take a look at the Speakout terms and conditions, to educate you on what you are getting and what you can do with the Speakout unlimited mobile browsing option.

I am a happy Fongo user, but I have no problem saying that the software client that Fongo provides is pretty awful. There are other issues with the client, where it gets to the point you really do not want to use this, and pay Fongo $50 so you can use the SIP settings, on much better VOIP clients. I think you have to go one of Fongo's sister sites, freephoneline.ca to get the $50 SIP settings.
As for another data provider, generally VOIP on 3G is a rather lousy experience. The latency can be rather high, so you can get something like a walkie talkie delay, and there is a lot of dropouts to make for a rather miserable experience. The Fongo client does not make the situation much better.
I have not personally experienced the VOIP quality on LTE, but you currently do not have a phone for it, so it is a moot point.
I do not have a clear path on what you can do. I used to use Speakout for 90% of my needs, and got an expensive 512 meg package from Virgin for the rest, but I eventually decided Speakout was good enough, dropped Virgin and used wifi when I needed to download updates or VOIP.
As for voice, I waited for the cell phone deals. Rogers had a prepaid $75 a year, 6pm local evenings and weekends package that I took advantage of a couple of months ago. So $100 credit lasts a year, as long as I do not make too many day time calls. That deal pops up every so often, just gotta pounce on it whenever it comes around.
Last February, Virgin had a Canada wide deal, $15 a month got you 7 pm evenings and weekends, and 100 minutes. So the deals are there, just not heavily advertised.
Right now, Koodo, Virgin, and Fido are pushing $45 Canada wide deals, with unlimited incoming, evenings and weekends, and 1 gig of data. 10% discount if you bring your own phone. Probably too expensive for your taste, but probably the best deal that is currently available.

Wow. Lots of info. Thanks a lot! What are your thoughts about getting a tablet SIM card and using it with an iPhone? I've read about people exploring with this; however, I don't know if it's possible, productive and/or legal.

From the scuttlebutt I hear, Telus seems to not really care what your tablet SIM card is used for, and I believe they have 5 gigs for $35. I hear some dealers do not even insist you have a tablet in your possession. Your mileage will most certainly vary.
Telus has an APN setting set up specifically for tablets, and if you use the default APN setting that comes with their phones, you get charged through the nose. So make sure you set up the right APN.
As for legality, the phone companies are already on legal thin ice trying to sell the same data quota at different prices for different devices. I suspect you won't get cancelled. Again, the phone companies are currently on a bit of a short leash as of late, so they probably do not want to stir up too much trouble.
