Last week I woke up to a complete connectivity loss to the highspeed network. I'm using an Android, HTC EVO 3d. I had the phone set to only connect to 3g. Now I cannot connect at all, I get an error when trying to connect manually that says my sim cannot connect to the network.
I have read the other thread on this subject but it's not spotty 3g service I'm getting. No matter what community I go to, I cannot connect. If this is the end of high speed browsing on Speakout, I will be forced to go to Rogers or Fido. I imagine many other Speakout customers who only stayed for the cheap highspeed browsing will leave as well.
Speakout customer service cannot help since there is no guarantee of 3g on "their" network.
Uicc update fail 2"
Here's hoping it's just a temporary problem. Though I doubt it.

it is not phone issue for sure. I have LG and Samsung both are 3G capable and can confirm that they are now EDGE/GSM only. It is not just data but that if you disable GSM, even voice would not work.
As for the speed, EDGE is about 300Kbps, UMTS as far as my measure goes is about 5Mbps.
For my usage which is checking email, it is ok but not something you want to use for generic browsing, google maps etc.
As shown I am in vanvouver and never see EDGE except when deep inside a building that is not reachable by 3G.
No one knows if it is a policy change or just temp network change.

Browsing anything but pages based on text on EDGE is a complete joke. You can click on a https / secure website link, go put on a pot of coffee, come back to the phone after the coffee has brewed and the page might have loaded completely. I believe the over usage and congestion of rogers highspeed network is just a lameass excuse by rogers and other cellular companies to justify the forced fornication of their customers. Since anyone on Speakout was getting it for a fair price, rogers decided to do what most monopoly companies do. Be completely greedy dicks.
I might be wrong, but I doubt it.

looks like this GSM only is a policy change.
I need to go abroad tomorrow so switch my SIM to a global roaming SIM and it automatically use UMTS instead of GSM. This SIM is non-canadian and bought for a few years when 3G wasn't even that popular.
So it seems that Rogers deliberately disallow SO/Petro Canada SIM to use 3G network and force it to 2G towers/channels.
For those who relies on the cheap 3G, it is a history now.

Maybe, but then Why am I still getting 3G coverage both where I live and where I work? If it was a policy change you'd think it would be implemented across the board!
I don't know but it seems that more and more area is experiencing this. Initially, I thought it is just network upgrade but once I see UMTS using my non-SO sim, it kinds of rule out this possibility. As it is unlikely that rogers would know my SIM ICCID and put it into their database but more like they know SO and put it into blacklist.
If could be just that it takes time to have these setting propagate.

I can guarantee that they are not blacklisting phones. In certain areas of Toronto (Scarborough) I cannot get 3G anymore, but as soon as I go either side of that area 3G resumes working. So for some reason they have shut down service in certain areas. As I travel across the city by train every day, I get a good sampling of where 3G service is active, and since Nov 2nd there has been no further decrease in 3G access.

Hey,
Just to chime in here from Vancouver area. My phone has been also buggy since Nov. 2. Using an iphone 3G, total loss of voice and data on 3G. Did a bit of trouble shooting and inserted my sim into my old 2G Iphone, service was up an no problems. Re-inserted the sim back into my 3G Iphone took over 10 minutes to lock on. I went into settings them turned off 3G and the phone works now without any issues. Rogers must be slowly pulling the 3G service in areas now as a way of forcing 3G users to move to their ROGERS/FIDO branded service. I also called customer service to let them know about the issues. We'll see what comes of this over the next week or so.

blacklist phone is too cumbersome for them, blacklist SIM is very easy. The feature was there may be for 20+ years. All the roaming agreement of GSM based on this.
My guess is as time goes by there will be fewer and fewer location with 3G on SO and eventually none.

For high speed data I will be going with anyone but Rogers. I know they control the main GSM network but I won't directly give money to them. More than likely Fido. Though i'll look into TELUS in my area.
I agree and why I use Bell for data. Roger's GSM does have an advantage of better penetration and may have better coverage in remote areas as they have been running GSM for so long. Bell/Telus UMTS was a pretty recent thing.
