it could be just cutting issue then. FYI, I also cut my own SIM and my# also is shown as unknown, no idea why. But it never failed me both in data and voice/sms.

EDIT:
I assume your iPhone is unlocked.

I think I figured it out: it's an iPhone 4 I bought on eBay and the baseband is 4.10.01... which means it likely isn't unlocked although it's jailbroken. Looks lke it's Gevey SIM for me...

gevey sim is not too useful if you want data, that is the impression I get based on the FAQ. And why I ended up using an iPad plan in my Bell locked iPhone and use the SO in a trusted Nokia 2630.

From what I have been reading on other forums, if you use the iPhone Config. tool and create a profile it should work. We'll know in a week or so!

it has nothing to do with the profile but the way gevey sim is designed. The data can be dropped from time to time. IOW, it works and then suddenly it doesn't. The remedy is to put the sim back to a phone with data to kind of 're-register' it to a tower or something(technically speaking).

That makes it basically useless. Well, we shall see and would like to be told that my impression is wrong. I have one sitting here which I would only be trying to use it when I am abroad

would it be easier just to ask someone in the apple store for a free new microSIM (I am told they are giving them out for the 4s) and then phone SO customer service to switch SIM card id's?

First, I'd like to confirm again that it worked on an iphone 4s after cutting, just care has to be taken since (at least my) chip is narrower than the chips seen in the tutorials all over the internet.

I did ask someone at a Canadian apple store if they will help, they just replied that they will not be able to help with this and its not recommended...

Anyway it did work with a lot of patience and caution.
A few tips after watching all the youtube videos and tutorial sites:
1) Look at the slot on your new phone, you need to visualize how the chip part of your SO Sim needs to remain visible when placed after cutting, that helps more than just saying 12mmx15mm.
2) Dont cut too much off so that you have .5 mm extra on all ends, spend time filing the excess down so that you have a perfect sim.
3) Closely look at your SO sim, (mine at least) has 3 rows of chips, the regular Sim usually is wider because it has 4 rows.
4) Use patience and you will get it right the first time round.
5) If not you *SHOULD* be able to link your account to a new SO SIM card sold for $10.

Hope it works out (try this at your own risk )

after watching the videos recommended on these forums I decided to give it a try.

I ended up totally messing up my sim card, the 12x15 does not work, my sim card is toast and had to go to 7/11 and buy a new one and switch over my number and balance to new sim card.

Does any one know of a store that will cut down the sim into a micro sim in Toronto??

I cannot afford to butcher another sim card again

I am currently using Nokia 1661 for mobile phone. However, I want to integrate instant messaging through Google Talk and have the instant message relayed to mobile phone as a text message. In that way, I can receive incoming text message real time on mobile.

First, I need a smart phone. If I buy an iphone, am I to use the same technique as you guys outlined above and use my SO sim and modify/cut it so it can be used for the iphone. Of course, I would first need to unlock the iphone.

Once I reached this far, can I use SO rates: $10 per month data plan and not switch carrier from SO??

Another thing: Why an iphone? What other options of smart phone I can use? I’m on a budget on this project. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and insights.

Regards

Unfortunately you are not likely to get Google Talk messaging to work through an iPhone on Speakout. I've tried pretty much all of them, and although some of them will allow you to receive messages, none of them will give you any kind of notification that a message has arrived.

If I buy an iphone, am I to use the same technique as you guys outlined above and use my SO sim and modify/cut it so it can be used for the iphone. Of course, I would first need to unlock the iphone.

As far as cutting the SIM, you only need to do this with an iPhone 4 or 4s. The 3GS an all previous versions have a regular sized SIM.

You only have to unlock non Rogers or Fido iPhones. Unlocking has become a complicated task recently. If you are going to buy a non Rogers branded phone, make sure that you fully understand about baseband, Software version, and what, if any, jailbreak/unlock options are available.
